I just got the canon eos rebel xs 1000d with a efs 18-55mm lens and EF 75-300mm lens for only 250 dollars. Was it worth it? Would you of done it?

Absolutely! If they're in good working order you did good and you have the basis for a good place to start. As soon as I could, if I were you, I would add a flash, maybe something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Bower-Digital-Automatic-Flash-Canon/dp/B005SEESI8/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1415671841&sr=8-8&keywords=flash+for+Canon+Rebel

Those lens are going to do best if you shoot them at a low iso like a 100 or 200 and with the aperture between f/5.6 and f/11 which will need to be done in pretty good light with the lens not zoomed all the way in or out. When the light starts to shut down on you, you still want to try to keep your aperture in that range and in order to do that you will often need to use a flash to get the best out of those lens.

Why in the lord's name would you make this comment. You could just continue to lurk. Or, you could not read something that you have no interest in. I, for one at least, have found this an interesting thread, and I get no sense similar to yours. You will find that positive comments are better than negative ones. I often find that if I have nothing good to say then I should just read on. Unfortunately, I have made an exception to my own "rule" in this case!

LOL. I was going to ask you about that. By the way, I don't think the Lord would want to share any complicity for my actions.

Have you got a camera? :D

I haven't joined a lot but I've never been kicked off... yet.

...and yes, I have a camera. Are you trying to become my best buddy now or what?

Thanks Amy. She and her mama were so happy to see each other again, but even more, she was glad to see her former constant baby sitter, Porter. She stayed with him ALL the time when she was a baby, except at mealtime...then ran to mama for dinner and right back to her buddy when her tummy got full. Now, after hugging mama for a day or two, she and Porter are constantly "together again".

Two good looking fillies!

When I grew up there was no fast food, we only drank water & milk with occasional lemonaide as a treat. Mom cooked a big meal every night & you only got that as a choice of food. Mom's didn't work outside the home unless there was no man around. Times have changed, something's for the better & some for the worse. I don't think there is any malice in this thread. It is all in fun. Not like the threads that compare cameras & systems for bragging rights. For the most part, if you are not interested in a thread, it's best to not participate. I really don't think the originator meant any harm. Bab

Dear Slick - I think you will find about 90% of the posts are not going to help you a lot with you photography. So If some subject you are not interested in comes up just go on by. With the nuber of posts to this thread I would say many are interested even though it will not make us better photographers. I know I have had fun remebering some of the old cameras I have had. This is just a fun post so if it is not fun for you don't read it. - Dave

To the "lurker" who wants to know the point of this discussion, If you have to ask there's no point in trying to explain.

I didn't have to ask but I sure would like to hear you try to explain it in terms of anything that makes any sense or any benefit to anyone beyond an opportunity to brag about their camera equipment or for those truly maladjusted people, who argue for inferior equipment and brag about getting it at Goodwill. Why don't you go ahead and treat me like I'm totally stupid and explain it to me, pleassssssse!

It's similar to friends sitting around and just talking about things. The subject could have been cars. Around the stove in the country store it might have been horses. Just frinds chatting. By the way Slick Willie, what's your favorite beer?

Not the stoves I grew up sitting around - anyone toss out a list of 14 cameras worth about $20,000 would have been ganged up on, called a blow hard, and run plumb out of the general store. People I sat around the stove with learned to say things like, "aw, it ain't nothing but me and the missus likes it ok" right before they whip out a stack of photos that'd knock your socks off. And about the beer - I'm afraid I don't drink alcohol. Got no money left after I make my camera payments. :D

Lurking with intent perhaps? What is said on this forum is of concern to all members, whether or not they choose to pass comment. I chose to pass comment! Your last comment places you where I had already thought it would. Bye bye!

Don't be a fool and "judge a book by its cover," especially if there's a chance that your comprehension is impaired. Further, you can cease acting as though the forum is your private domain that needs your protection and consider that a person who arrived as a member today has just as much collateral in the forum as do you - not one iota. You do not need to protect anyone or anything from me nor anyone else, just yourself. My last comment to which you refer was purposely pointed and appropriate so you would understand perfectly and as I said, you sir, can simply bugger off! Now, if you don't choose to converse with me, now would seem to be a good time to shut your cake hole.

I'm ON the right side! As a brand new member you have called into question all and any comments that Grandpa (a well respected member of this community) makes.
I am surprised that Sharpshooter (who I realise can be controversial) agreed with you. He is obviously canvassing for friends!
You describe yourself as "Slick". I wouldn't disagree with that! In the interests of this community I suggest that we do not converse - as we won't get along.

I am a new member but I've been a lurker longer than you have been a member, much longer, for whatever that matters. An ill-logical analogy such as was used in this instance does indeed make me question anything else one might say who used such an analogy when it comes to information that I do not already know the answer to - which was my point. For a new person who knows about changing fan belts and knows nothing about camera equipment, if the use of that analogy would not give pause to accepting further knowledge emitting from that source, I don't know what would.

I was not insulting, condescending, and made no derogatory comments about the person, just the deed which clearly was not in anyone's favor. I see "Grandpa" has remained silent, which you probably should have done. I would imagine that "Grandpa" would like to have that one back. That you choose to attempt to control what I have to say is, to me, worse than what I said and frankly I don't care what you think or who you converse with, the fact remains that it was an inappropriate analogy that should make any further comment questionable to anyone who is looking for answers. If you choose to avoid me, so be it but don't be surprised if I should choose to comment about something you've said. And, perhaps you might want to think about letting other people take care of themselves and not intercede where an issue is clearly none of your concern. "Grandpa" is a big boy and doesn't need you to protect him. As you might say in your country - "bugger off."

I'm kinda new here as a member but I've been a long-time lurker and while I know it may be perceived as impertinent but I just gotta ask, what is the purpose of this thread, what is it accomplishing, and why would anyone serious about photography want to participate in it beyond an opportunity to make the point of "mine's bigger than yours?" Who benefits from this discussion?

Your article was quite appropriate. You did restate, but with a different perspective, some points that others had made. You also provided at least a couple of new things to consider. In particular you were the only one to really emphasize, and explicitly so, the very important concept of experimenting to see what works and what does not.

Everyone learns in their own way, and many times having the exact same thing said in several different ways is precisely what makes a complex subject suddenly pop into place. I'm sure somebody, and probably more than one, picked up on the big picture because of your article!

Slick, welcome to the Hog, I wouldn't take anybody's comments too personally, as NONE of us here have been here that long!
I agree with your response to Grandpa. Nothing against grandpa, I have great respect for him. BUT there is a lot of tongue-in-cheek and innuendo that gets flung around here. Usually it's done with a smiley face so that we all know it's just making a point.
Remember, we are all just phantoms hiding behind our keyboards, and we all go away when you, "Power Down" !

 :-) Thank you! It sorta looked to me like DelDerby was on the wrong side of the issue and proving his own point and I thought I'd give him a chance to figure his way back to the right side.

Canon 5D MK III which I've had for 4 or 5 years now. It's all the FF I could ask for. I also own the 7D which I will probably update to the 7D MK II someday. Of course that upgrade may have to compete with the release of the Canon 100-400mm L series II lens. On the other hand, if they price it at $2K or above, I'll probably pass.

Time flies when you're having fun! :-) Canon 5d Mk II released in Nov 2008, 6 years ago this month. Canon 5d Mk III released Mar 2012, not yet 3 years? Not that it matters, of course. It all depends on what you do with it, not how long you've had it and you do some excellent stuff with yours.

I've been following this forum for quite a while and just hadn't joined 'til recently. What is my "sort" and what's your problem with what I said.
