I have a Nikon D 5200 and I use it to take photos at track and field meets I also have a tamarron 18 x 200 lens and a Nikon 18 x 300 lens which would be the better to use to get the best photos

Depends on your access & therefore how close you are to the action. I use my 70-200 from inside the field & 100-400 from the stands on a similar crop sensor body 7Dmkii. Remember to "fill" the frame on your specific athlete. The Sports forum may have more input to your question.

So, how long did it take to get back home from photographing solar eclipse?

625 Miles from home in Michigan at my parents backyard in Crossville TN.
Normal trip ~9hrs. left 30min after last contact (full SUN again), decided to take ONLY back roads out of TN by avoiding any freeway wider than 2 lanes
Winding, twisting roads but discovered more beautiful woods & small towns.
Home within 10hrs. thru Ohio & Michigan late night Monday; actually not bad at all...
Great experience & fun with family
