I've been retired for 2.5 years and it has allowed me to immerse myself in photography. I joined a club and began competing which was a great way of having the basics reinforced by the judges comments. Club members were also very generous with suggestions and help. I have now joined a non competition club to explore the creative side of photography. If you are so inclined the technical and creative aspects of photography and post processing can absorb 100s of hours in learning and exploring. It's endless and keeps the grey cells working hard. Enjoy your retirement.

Hyperdrive Colourspace UDMA3 is the correct name for the backup device i mentioned in my reply. Sorry about the incorrect name.

I bought a UDMA3 Surecolour device. Available in 1 or 2TB it worked like magic. It's very compact and you plug your cards straight into it to copy down. You can then review on the screen and delete ones you don't want etc. After downloading from the card I synced the UDAM3 with a similar size portable hard drive. Now i had a backup, i returned the cards to the camera and formatted them so that each day I stated with empty cards.

I told of my experiences earlier in blog. Having had it occur once which cost a heap to repair I decided never again. This is how I now prevent the outcome happening. The strap is connected to the lens and the body or on a smaller lens I just have a back up connection to the camera body. Speed Carry supply a strap system that connects the body to the strap but it pulled apart on me so I made my own. Photo to follow

I also had the Strap around my neck but it was attached to the lens. I have since retro fitted to the strap a wire to the camera so both lens (where applicable) and camera are now connected to the strap.

In my case it was never out of my sight. The lenses were firmly attached. I cannot understand why or how it happened.

It's happened to me twice, the first time ended in a $600+ camera body repair because I had my strap on the lens. I was walking over boulders climbing up a valley in Kakadu national Park. I don't know how it occurred. Camera 5D mkiii lens 70-200
The second occasion was the other day I was sitting in the drivers seat and picked the camera up from the floor of the passengers side floor of the car and the lens dropped off. Camera 1DX Mk ii Lens 24-70.
A simple design modification as you suggested to Canon would solve this I'm sure.

Hi Todd
I cannot read tye files our copy onto my desktop. Windows 10 error message says I must format to use.
The reader and computer are USB3.
My desktop computer is less than six months old, and a purpose built big cruncher for processing very large files. My last macro shot with my Pentax 645z was 15 x 50+mb shots stitched in Photoshop.
I can download from the Cfast in camera with the USB cable.
Tomorrow i leave for a holiday in Vietnam and will not take my laptop just my Colourspace UDMA3 back up disk plus another back up to duplicate. I will take a spare CF card and copy the cfast onto that within camera so I can download onto the UDMA3. This is my work around until I can find the answer.
Thanks for your thoughts. Cheers Brian

Thanks for the thought. The camera is the latest technology being a 1DXmkii Canon.

Thanks. I think it works like that and will check again, but its not ideal as I also want to use the cfast reader when I transfer into my Colourspace UDMA3 hard disk. I use this rather than my computer when I travel. I have been copying within the camera from the Cfast to a blank CF card but that's not ideal either. Iam wondering if the issue lies with the reader? Again thanks for your suggestion.

Hi guys
When I try to import the raw images from my cfast card into Lightroom using a Lexar card reader windows 10 tells me I must format the card before use. I am using the card in a Canon 1Dmkii. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how do you resolve it please? The card is a Lexar 128 GB . Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your suggestion. I has learnt the use of the Select and mask but it wasn't responding when i went to use the tools.

It looks Like I now have it solved thanks to Tony Kuyper from TKActions. His suggestion was:

If you don't have this, update to get it. The major change in 2015.5.1 was fixing a Select and Mask bug.

If you have 2015.5.1, then your PS preferences might be corrupted. This video can tell you how to reset them: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html
That often fixes weird, one-person problems in PS, and you're the only one reporting this issue.

Resetting my preferences fixed the issue so my issue is now solved.

Thanks again.
