Hi guys
When I try to import the raw images from my cfast card into Lightroom using a Lexar card reader windows 10 tells me I must format the card before use. I am using the card in a Canon 1Dmkii. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how do you resolve it please? The card is a Lexar 128 GB . Thanks for your help.

Try it with a cable from camera to computer.

Thanks. I think it works like that and will check again, but its not ideal as I also want to use the cfast reader when I transfer into my Colourspace UDMA3 hard disk. I use this rather than my computer when I travel. I have been copying within the camera from the Cfast to a blank CF card but that's not ideal either. Iam wondering if the issue lies with the reader? Again thanks for your suggestion.

Without looking at the manual I would guess your camera is not compatible with a 128gb card....looks like the camera was made in 2004. Most electronics had a 64gb limit back then. Check your camera manual.

Thanks for the thought. The camera is the latest technology being a 1DXmkii Canon.

Ah, I Googled Canon 1Dmkii without the X, like you wrote in your first message which Ken Rockwell said was an 8mp camera made in 2004. So what they say then is correct; garbage in = garbage out. If you give the wrong information you will receive the wrong information unless someone mistakenly gives you the right information.

Just to rule out the obvious, did you format the card in-camera before taking the photos?

Not all equipment is capable of processing the new "fast cards" yet. At least your camera will allow the regular CF cards. You might have to wait for the rest of the world to catch up to you.

Does your Lexar reader support CFast cards (in addition to CF)? Also, what file system is the CFast card formatted for? (FAT32, exFAT...)

You should be able to just connect the reader to your computer and copy the files to your desktop. Can you do that? Is your Reader USB 2 or 3 or both? How about the computer input? I use 64 and 128 CFast cards with my 1Dx Mk II so the camera is not the problem. I don't use Windows though. How old is your computer? If it is 2 or 3 years I would think it should work. Should see it just like any drive, I would think. It would be interesting test to see if you can connect directly to the camera with the included USB cable and read them in. But I understand that is not where you want to be...but will it work?

Best,
Todd Ferguson

I always format my cards in the camera after I download and backup.

Hi Todd
I cannot read tye files our copy onto my desktop. Windows 10 error message says I must format to use.
The reader and computer are USB3.
My desktop computer is less than six months old, and a purpose built big cruncher for processing very large files. My last macro shot with my Pentax 645z was 15 x 50+mb shots stitched in Photoshop.
I can download from the Cfast in camera with the USB cable.
Tomorrow i leave for a holiday in Vietnam and will not take my laptop just my Colourspace UDMA3 back up disk plus another back up to duplicate. I will take a spare CF card and copy the cfast onto that within camera so I can download onto the UDMA3. This is my work around until I can find the answer.
Thanks for your thoughts. Cheers Brian

Brian, I guess it must be something Windows related. Can't help you much there as I am a Mac user. I avoid Windows as much as I can.
I guess the good news is that you have a workable work around to get you by until you can figure it out. Enjoy your trip!

Best,
Todd

When I format the cfast card in camera I have no idea what it comes out as.....Fat32 ? Or whatever. I will be the default requirement of Canon
