I'm 76 and cannot hold the 600mm without a tripod. Certainly wish I could; but that is life!!!

These are some shots that I took a couple of days ago. All have been cropped. I used a Nikon D750 and a Tamron 150-600 G2.

I hate to state the obvious: Did you contact Tamron and ask if they have the mount?

I was at Gatorland near Orlando yesterday. I go there every year in mid March. I've never seen anything like it. It continues to amaze me. If you want to practice birds in flight, this is the place. If you want to photograph birds mating, this is the place. If you want to see baby birds up close this is the place. The food there is reasonable and on Thursday - Saturday you can get in at 7:00 AM. If you are active/retired military it is free. FL residents I think is $15 and FL senior residents $13. I love photography and I have no financial or any other ties to Gatorland.

I'm 76 and retired 21 years ago. If you don't want to move, then find what organizations are in your area and then determine were you best fit in. Join a golf league. Volunteer to help foster children (look up Guardian ad Litem in your area). If you go to church, get involved and find out what groups you most enjoy. If you want to move, then find an ACTIVE senior retirement community with a golf course and many amenities. My wife and I moved to Lake Ashton in Lake Wales, FL. We have a good photography club and many good locations within an hour of here to photograph wildlife. Even within the community there are wonderful opportunities to photograph wildlife. I am not associated with Lake Ashton in any financial way. We are residents and simply love the life and love retirement. If you're from the North as we were, I also do not mind not shoveling snow. My best advice is to jump in and try different things; you must have a positive attitude. It may take some time but it will happen. If you move buy into a new community; it will be easier to make friends. Sometimes making friends can be difficult; but please remember to make a friend you have to be a friend. Do not be afraid to take the first step. Good luck and I hope you enjoy retirement as much as we do.

We lived in Kingston for 20 years 1971- 1993. It was a great place to raise a family. The most interesting photo shots would probably be in the historic section and on and near the waterfront. Not sure there is much at the Mall or in downtown shopping center, unless they have significantly up graded downtown. Went to the Mall last year and it had many stores empty. Good luck and happy shooting.

Went to visit our daughter in Warrenton, VA two weeks ago. These are some of the pictures I took of the Fall Colors.

What was your shutter speed? You need to shoot at a shutter speed of 1/mm of your lens. For instance if your lens is at 300mm you need to shoot at a minimum of 1/300 of a second. Shutter speed is critical for long shoots. The faster the shutter speed the sharper the pictures assuming there is enough light. If time permits lower your ISO to the minimum necessary to get the proper lighting. Good luck!!!

I was also on Gate 1 travel and I replied before. If you are shooting in large and fine format, maximum quality, than I would recommend additional memory cards. I took two 128 GB, two 64 GB and two 32 GB cards. I had two bodies. I only filled one 128 GB, one 64 GB and one 32 GB card. I ended taking about 5000 pictures and a few movies. I had my camera set to Raw plus JPG. The raw filled the 128, and the jpg filled the 64 GB. On the other camera I shot both raw and jpg also; but used it much less. As I said earlier I had a long lens on my better camera, and basic lens on the other. Good luck. Always try to get the highest seats in the safari trucks. You can see more. We had one woman who became our spotter. She was incredible at finding lions and leopards. We saw the big five several times.

If you are taking Gate 1 Travel, I have the following advice: Just returned from 16 day tour of South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. I also was very concerned about weight before I left. I had called numerous times to get an understanding of what were my options. Bottom line: When we got there we ended flying on British Airlines on all our internal flights. They have a one bag limitation to check, 23 KG (50 lbs), they never checked my carry on which was legal size but well over 14lbs and contained all my camera equipment. I had a tripod and 150-600mm lens, and two base cameras, and 24-120mm lens. It was difficult using the 600mm lens while on safari. There isn't enough room in the 4 wheel drive trucks. If I had to do it over again I would have taken my 70-300mm lens instead. Hope this helps. Good luck. Hope you have as much success as I did. Hope to post some pictures next week after we return home.

It's a great picture. Did you do much editing? The stars are almost to bright; but I certainly wish that I can capture something like that someday.

Thanks for the quick reply. I certainly appreciate your help. The pictures were super. Sure hope I can do as well. I must admit that I never thought about vibration while the motor is running and the vehicle is stopped. I know I can't hold the 600mm steady without support. I'll have to give that some more thought. The foam rubber padding is 2" thick and I can wrap it at least twice for 4" of foam. I sure hope that will absorb most of the vibration. The only other alternative is to use a monopod. Again thanks for your help.

I'm taking a similar trip in September; our stops are South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Where you able to use a tripod while on the truck? If I cannot, I have a piece of foam rubber, about an inch thick that I will wrap around the bar while on the truck and secure w velcro straps. Do you think this will be enough to stabilize my big lens? I'm planning on bringing my D750 w Tamron 150-600mm, and a D7000 w Nikon 24-120mm f/4. I'll have other lenses. Did you take any small planes while traveling; if yes, did they weigh your carry-on? I have a hard camera backpack/roller suitcase. It meets the dimension requirements for a carry-on; but it will exceed the weight limitations when we are on the smaller planes. The tour I'm taking suggested telling our tour leader as soon as we arrive and ask for his help. Was there much dust? I have several plastic bags that I will use to transport. Did you have much time to setup your gear. How did you prepare to minimize setup time? What were your favorite settings while shooting wildlife: if possible one for birding and another for larger game. Are you allowed to use a flash while on a game drive? Did you use one? Thanks in advance for any info. Sure would like to see some of your photos.

And they are the dirtiest of all ducks. To make matters worse they are protected.

Question about unknown critter: What is the critter carrying on it's back? It looks like the skeletons of other insects. Is that a protection barrier for his own safety or a food supply for later? If you do not know, maybe another member can answer.
