Renters are the ones who caused the vandalism. Getting water and power back is WAY beyond my means. Selling it is out of the question, as it is our old homestead and has been in the family since 1835. So thanks, for responding, but no.

In my opinion, cameras are not the solution to your problem.
If the renters caused the vandalism then you know who they are. Prosecute them.
If the property is located in an isolated area (No neighbors and out in the country) and is not occupied, it will be almost impossible to prevent vandalism.
Notifying the local authorities, from 1000 miles away, that you are observing vandalism or trespassing via a camera will get little or no immediate reaction on the part of the local authorities.(IMO)
Showing the police or sheriff a video, after the vandalism has occurred, will not trigger them to do very much.(IMO)- And even if they do catch the perpetrator, the damage has been done to the cherished artifact and no amount of compensation or repair will restore its lost value in your mind.

Installing cameras to ‘spy’ on renters is not acceptable.

Your best bet is to get some reliable person/relative to occupy the property as caretaker, with the prevision they will not be required to pay rent as long as they maintain the property in its original form and condition. It might be tough to find a suitable candidate if there is no electric or water. You may need to pay someone to stay on the property. If you go this route, make sure you get them to sign a legally binding contract with stipulated terms. Otherwise, they might evoke ‘squatter’s’ rights, after a period of time, and gain ownership of the property.

I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear. The hospital beds are too rigid and too heavy to be carried down the stairs. They cannot be turned around the corners 22 floors times 2 for each flight of stairs. To facilitate carrying patients down the stairs teams of six would climb the stair. In each hospital room there are usually two patients. An acrylic sheet would be slid under the patient. The patient would be wrapped up and cloth belts would secure the patient inside. Five people would carry the patient down the stair. As one person got tired, the free person would take their place. Why would we do that? Why not use the elevators? In the basement elevator have weight wells. As the elevator ascends to the top floor weights descend and are kept in a hole or well. As the water surged into the basement it would flood the well rendering the elevator useless. When water filled the well the weights could not be lifted out.

Furthermore, much of the extremely heavy equipment such as MRIs X-ray machines, CT scanners are in the basement. Repairing these is impossible because a part or piece cannot be switched out and replaced.

At each stairway entrance we had rest stations and water bottles to be given out.

By the way, there was no power so no pumps were working. The toilets didn’t work. The problem was solved by pouring the water from the bottles of the cooler into the toilet.

As an employee of Bellevue Hospital , I have been there for 21 years. I have friends who have been there 40 years. Don’t get me wrong. I have seen and witnessed much.

Please accept my apology for not clarifying a few things. I don’t want to out-do anyone else here on UHH. We all have our talents.

Thank you for the clarifications. Is it true the elevator weights enter the wells only when the elevator is operated at the top floor?

To PENDENIS: Thank you for your service.

Being an Eagle Scout means a lot to people who can appreciate the rank…..
I had MREs. I had them secured and when Hurricane Sandy came in for a visit, my job was to assist the US Coast Guard amongst other branches evacuating patients from Bellevue Hospital. We worked in teams of sixes climbing up the stairs and carrying patients down (wrapped in hard plastic sheets) to the ground floor waiting ambulances. The weight wells in the basement would flood with water. During a break I offered my MREs up. All of the coasties refused. When I told them they were kosher they all grabbed them up. The boxes I brought them in were empty and back we went. In a couple of months I received the patch to sew onto my bag.

Worse when you have to pay a rental to use a feature already in car, understand BMW does it with heated seats in some models, GMC WITH wifi, it will keep growing, rental fees

Which means you must pay a monthly/yearly fee to use something you already paid for when you bought the car! They can turn the item/device off or on as they desire, over the car’s communication network.
When I bought my Hyundai, they asked me to pay a fee for the special security system already installed in the car. When I declined, they took the car down the street to a security company, to disable the system via software. No hardware was removed, replaced or modified. The hardware I paid for, and is still in the car, was simply disabled.
The car also contains a Sirius satellite radio system. Which I paid for but never turn on or use.
When I refused to sign up for the monthly/yearly fee program (after the one mouth free trial period), the radio limits itself to only the normal (Free) stations. Now and then Sirius turns on the radio remotely (To my great surprise) and it asks me to enroll in the satellite monthly fee program. I just turn it off again. In the future, we will own nothing! Every device will be under the full control of the seller. If you don’t pay the monthly fee or try to get it repaired by a third party, they will simply turn it off!

When I was a kid, we had a 1938 Olds convertible with a rumble seat.

I had two of them. Here is the other one.

Boy! Is that good advice! You must look ahead. Absolutely nothing is happening where you are at the moment. Everything will happen up ahead. I see people with their brake lights on so much that I wonder how they can get anywhere. I take my foot off the gas as often as I can, and I avoid using the brakes. I learned a lot from taking motorcycle-riding courses. Looking at the exit of a long, curvy turn will automatically make you use the correct amount of steering input.

Even as a kid, I liked reading about how to drive. I've always been interested in cars.

When I was going to school, I drove a 1934 Ford coupe with suicide doors and mechanical brakes, actuated via metal rods. These rods were prone to breaking or detaching themselves from one end or the other and dragging on the ground with lots of sparks. Being low on time(I worked full time) and finances, I would wait until all four rods had disconnected before fixing them. This meant I was driving most of the time with only one or two of the brakes working.

Sometimes, I drove that car with no brakes at all! I was always looking way ahead trying to see what was going on and adjusting my speed accordingly so I would not need to stop.

If I had to stop at a light I would judge the distance, turn off the ignition to stop the motor from rotating. Then, coast while in a low gear, use the clutch, with the dead motor as a brake, to slow the forward movement of the car. If I misjudged the distance, I would sometimes end up short of the mark or in the middle of the intersection. When the light turned green, I would simply restart the motor and drive on. Or, if the battery was dead, I would push it to get it started again. Try that with suicide doors!

I also stretched out my gas mileage in that car by pushing in the clutch(or putting the gearbox into neutral) anytime I was off the gas (Called FREE WHEELING). Then I used the technique above to slow or stop if the brakes were not working.

Another reason to not have a bottle of water on your seat is that it can roll off and if it lands on the driver's floor it is instantly a hazard. If it rolls under the brake pedal a person could end up crashing their car since they could not stop in a timely manner. And speaking of bottled water -- what did we do 40 years ago? When traveling, did we just stay thirsty until we got to our destination? And who would have imagined the proliferation of bottled water? When it first came out there were basically two kinds -- spring and distilled. Now there are hundreds of brands, flavors, and sizes. Some people have no problem paying several dollars for a single bottle of water like Fiji or VOSS. We used to drink from a garden hose and we live still! Due to the dangers presented by bottled water and the cost, do we really need it?

Would you let a 5 year old drive a 18 wheeler? Of course not! I am a cranky old coot who would rather sit on the couch, smoke a cigar and polish off a bottle of whiskey while watching the fireworks on tv. I don’t need to light them off and I’m not allowed in Brooklyn and where I live in Pennsylvania. My dog will rest next to me with his head on my lap. No whiskey for him. He likes ear scratches.
By the way, I have photographed fireworks. They are slow and steady. Having a long shutter speed, wide open aperture and dialing your ISO dialed the way up is a good ticket.
As for working as a pharmacist, we usually get plenty of prescriptions for prescription burn cream.

Here is what I see as the next thing: You buy a new car, but it will not shift automatically unless you pay a monthly fee. Otherwise, you must shift it manually.

Here is another one:
When I bought my new car a few years ago it had a fancy security system on board. I was asked to sign up for a monthly subscription to make it work. When I refused...they took it to a security shop and disabled the system with a SIM card. The hardware is still in the car...I am sure I paid for it as part of the car but I am not allowed to use it.

I'm not a lawyer but it seems like there's a fundamental question here of what ownership means. What's to prevent a business from doing this with any product. What if I purchased a car but after a certain period of time the car's computer was programmed to prevent the car from starting unless I paid a monthly fee to the manufacturer? Where could this trend end?

I think that is already happening. I saw some place you need to pay a monthly fee to make the seat warmers work on a car you think you bought and own. Not starting, will be next! Or the warranty will be void if you do not allow the dealer to do the oil changes using their 'special' oil. The 'special' oil will only be available from the dealer at an exorbitant price.
