Just wondering if anyone has found a decent ballpoint pen? I have bought several from Costco and Walmart and I have never found one that in dependable. You would think someone could make a pen that works it is so frustrating to be in the middle of filling out a document and it stops laying down ink.

Very hard to beat the old Bic Cristal. Super reliable, even in low outdoor temps, and ya can't beat the price.

These days it's best to ignore them, not slow down or interact in any way. You never know when someone will pull out a gun and fire away if irritated.

I recently made a little travel ukulele based on one I saw online. I like to have everything in case, so I made a little case for the little uke. I'm not a carpenter or a cabinet maker, but I never shy away from a challenge, and this was challenging at every step. The covering material is called Tolex, and it's used on guitar cases and amplifiers. It's like a tough vinyl. I got it from Stewart-MacDonald.

As a retired guitarist who used to work for Gibson at one point, I can testify that this is really well-done! Getting real Tolex used to be really challenging, so I'd guess that might have taken more than a minute or two of your time. Plus, gluing it down properly is a challenge unto itself. Again, really nice job!

Great album!! Interesting the way it was recorded. Some old recordings of Ray with the old Basie band were found. With modern technology, Ray's voice was lifted from the recordings and charts were written for the newer Basie band to record tracks. Then the voice was married to the new recordings of the band. Kick ass players, production and recording quality. Thanks for posting, Mark! Make sure you check out the whole album.

Thanks for the great link, Mark! Chet sounds great on this, as usual, but I'm especially moved by his ballad playing here. One can really feel his inside emotions.

I heard some discussion of "The Watcher" (Netflix) on TV, so I took a look. It's a series based on a "real story," but one episode was enough for me. Looking up the real story online, it's not very scary, and the plot and action of the series seemed lame. That's just me, though. Lots of other people are enjoying it. Opinions?

One of the problems with Netflix is that they've decided to emphasize their own productions, many of which aren't worth the trouble. Dropped it earlier in the year and don't miss it.

Note:Clifford Brown was at the top of the jazz scene in 55'. With pianist Richie Powell (Bud Powell's brother), Richie's wife and Clifford Brown were driving to a gig. Richie's wife was driving and fell asleep at the wheel and all were killed in the accident. More than a tragic loss. Fortunately for us, Clifford left quite a few recorded sessions. This one is incredible.
Lee Morgan, who also had a tragic early death, patterned his style of play after Clifford Brown. Luckily, we have Clifford's and Lee's geniuses recorded.

A great find, Mark! I didn't know he'd done an album like this, with Neal Hefti arrangements no less!

This was during a long-past era for music, where great jazz and studio musicians recorded on labels that featured "easy listening" music for adults. My dad and mom had radio stations on much of the time that featured this kind of music, all of which was recorded with studio musicians, sometimes featuring famous jazz players. The small market for jazz made this market a great place for jazz musicians to stabilize their incomes.

Jackie Gleason made a ton of money putting out these records, which not featuring jazz musicians, you can bet there were a lot of jazz musicians mixed in with studio players:

The Hollyridge Strings were also big in this market:

It was actually a pretty big market for adults who weren't much interested in the rock 'n' roll artists of the time.

My first idol. I learned to play jazz by playing along with his records. I wore them out. Later I played with Ziggy Elman, Ray Anthony, Raphael Mendez, The Dorsey's, Miles, Chet, Maynard, Lee, Freddy, Count, Stan, ... I wasn't that good, but I did have fun and performed at local spots, dances, weddings, ... My love for music is a constant in my life.
Thanks for viewing.

This is good old big band swing from the 50's - 70's. I saw him and most big bands in the 50's at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ during the summers. Wow! I sure was lucky!
