Can you take a dog photo without the owners permission?

Hi bee, Inevitably you will receive a smorgasbord of answers to your question and I, for one, believe your question is a good one. I would say that the BEST answer to your question would be to consult an attorney in your venue (not to be confused with jurisdiction) because different states have privacy and copywrite laws which do not mirror each other. You should also be aware that unless the well-intentioned responders to your questions possess a law license in your state, or what ever the state is the site of your anticipated dog photo, that they are rendering to you legal opinions without a license. In my state practicing law without a license is punishable by a $1000 fine and/or up to 1 year in jail. That fact does not pertain to you however.
I'm sure I will receive less than friendly replies to my answer, but please, we should do well to remember that this site is for photographers, not for legal opinions. To look at it another way, suppose a professional photographer might take umbrage to a hobbiest taking away his wedding business, and professionals do not (cannot) work for free. Well, licensed attorneys do not like to do only pro Bono work either, and for ppl to come to the Hog for answers to legal questions takes $ from the mouths of lawyers (and their children)...just say'in..

Hi Gary,
I have just had a look at the BLT website and have seen your photographs. It looks like everyone had a good day and you got to pursue one of your hobbies, with a mention and thanks from the organizers.
Good on you for providing your services to this cause, the world needs more people like you who are willing to give freely to their community.

Thanks for the kind words Geof!

WOW, Good for you, donate your time and talent to an organization you believe in is admirable

What really amazes me is some of the responses to your thread. You are VOLUNTEERING, why would anyone even think of being PAID  :?: :?: Doesn't matter what you donate, when you donate you are not looking for anything in return, well maybe a Thanks, a smile, a pat on the back is enough. What you will receive is a feeling that I contributed to something I believe in, I hope it did some good- no matter how small.

As a society are we getting so hungry for money that we have forgotten about being good neighbors.

What is the going rate for volunteering anyhow? I wonder if some of the people on this thread would expect money for helping a stranger boost their car?

You will receive no greater reward for your actions the one that comes from within- Ya I can help.

You my friend are a keeper- Well done ;) ;)

Wikipedia=Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity where an individual or group provides services for no financial gain. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development, and is often intended to promote goodness or to improve human quality of life. Volunteering may have positive benefits for the volunteer as well as for the person or community served.[1] It is also intended to make contacts for possible employment. Many volunteers are specifically trained in the areas they work, such as medicine, education, or emergency rescue. Others serve on an as-needed basis, such as in response to a natural disaster.

If you donate a loaf of bread to the food bank do you tell the reciprocant how to toast it?

Thank you Swede! This is the best response I've had in this thread. You made my day. It's good to know there are still some people out there who get it.
Keep on shooting!

Be sure to get photo credits. And remember your expenses like auto etc. will be a deduction on your taxes.

Volunteering is a great way to serve and "give back" to your community and great causes. It also can serve as a spring board of experience if you want to take it further.

Thanks Craig!

[I would not let him just give your photos away. I would say let's get together and come up with a fair price for the pictures. Of course you could have the money to to the non-profit. If folks can afford a boat they can afford to pay for pictures of it. - Dave[/quote]

I think you miss the point on several levels Dave. First of all, it is not for you to "let" me do or not do anything. I will do with my photos what I want and if that means donating my time and efforts to a good cause in my hometown, then that is what I'll do. Secondly, I own a kayak and I'm broke. Nobody's business but mine!!!
I don't want to come off as a sanctimonious jerk but maybe if more people to an interest in their communities the world might be a better place. But that is a personal decision for everyone to make for themselves.

There is nothing stupid about not understanding a word or in this case, acronym, or whatever. The web director may have assumed that you are more familiar with the organization than you are.

But while you're at it, you may want to think over the fact you didn't charge them for your services. If you will always offer them for free to this organization, fine. If not, I think that maybe you should let them know that now as well (in a nice way).

Good advice Morning. I did email her that I did not understand the acronym but no reply yet. As far as getting paid; this is a community based organization in a small town. Everyone including the officers, directors, workers, and yes, even their lawyers, work pro bono. I understood going in this was the case. I was flattered that they saw my photography as a valuable (not in the monetary sense) way to contribute. Besides the volume of work would be nominal.
