I need some help fellow Hoggers! Last weekend I photographed an event for a non-profit organization. I did not charge them as this was a community event sponsored by an organization I would like to become further involved with on a volunteer basis. Apparently they liked the images and have invited me to join their Public Relations Committee. It's a good cause.
The Web director send the following email to me this morning. Can anyone enlighten me as to what a "BLT" is?
I don't want to sound more stupid than I am.
For context the email read as follows:
"I'm going to post those photos on our blog this morning. I thought I would offer those individual photos to the folks who were in the parade if they email the BLT. Is that OK?"

Not helpful I know, but in these parts, BLT means only one thing- a sandwich! Bacon, lettuce and tomato...
I suspect it's an in-house acronym. Just send them an email that you don't understand the acronym and would they please enlighten you?
There is nothing stupid about not understanding a word or in this case, acronym, or whatever. The web director may have assumed that you are more familiar with the organization than you are.
But while you're at it, you may want to think over the fact you didn't charge them for your services. If you will always offer them for free to this organization, fine. If not, I think that maybe you should let them know that now as well (in a nice way).

Just a shot in the dark - could it be shorthand for the organization?

Some people offer their time and services without being reimbursed for it. It's called volunteering.
Was this last weekend's boat parade for the Branford Land Trust?

Good advice Morning. I did email her that I did not understand the acronym but no reply yet. As far as getting paid; this is a community based organization in a small town. Everyone including the officers, directors, workers, and yes, even their lawyers, work pro bono. I understood going in this was the case. I was flattered that they saw my photography as a valuable (not in the monetary sense) way to contribute. Besides the volume of work would be nominal.

Oh, I know about volunteering and have no problems with it. In fact, I do plenty of it myself.
But this story also brought to mind a very sad situation, where someone started as a volunteer 'to get a foot in the door.'
When she wanted to be paid a nominal fee for her services, she was no longer welcome. That's why I think that, if anyone starts as a volunteer and wants to start charging later, it should be made known from the very beginning. 't Will prevent a lot of heart-ache.
This is not the answer to the BLT question but I would not let him just give your photos away. I would say let's get together and come up with a fair price for the pictures. Of course you could have the money to to the non-profit. If folks can afford a boat they can afford to pay for pictures of it. - Dave
