I am going to take some photos of some bison in a fenced area. It is an 8 foot high fence, chain link type. How can i shoot photos through the fence and not show the fence. Is it possible?

Last April 1st, I saw a fence filter that was designed to block out posts. Also stated that it would remove glare from glass too. Merry Christmas 🎄

Hi Tomcat:
I agree with you, best bet for your student is the 85 1.8. I found the best setting for me and my D500 for basketball is. 2.2 in bad lighting, but with LED lighting I can go to 3.2 for better focusing. These shots are with a D4. Showing the quality of this combination.
Be safe and be healthy.

Those D3s/D4 cameras cannot be topped for low-light, but my Z6 is so close that I've mothballed my D3s until needed for portraiture. I thought about lending her my D3s but I'm too afraid of a catastrophe happening and not getting it back.

Agree about the 85mm under normal game conditions. I think Tom said he has to shoot behind yellow tape putting him well beyond normal. The times we live in huh..

Oh yeah, it's been a couple of days and I totally forgot about the yellow tape thing. I'm not shooting my high school until covid-19 has disappeared. I've been training their yearbook editor and she is doing a great job with a D3300. Her pictures remarkably improved when the school bought her an 85mm f/1.8. But still miles to go, but she'll get it. Tom's best shot is with that 105mm for now, I guess. Anyway, good talking to you again Jules. Stay safe.

I shot these at f/4.0 I wanted to have a little more DOF to see what it would look like. Bad mistake I guess. What do you think a 105mm micro f/2.8 would look like? Do you think it would get me close enough to get a decent crop in camera? I may go and shoot a game with that lens for a couple periods and see what it would look like. Things are getting weird. The last 4-5 days I have been sent text game changes. Either they are cancelled, moved or could be rescheduled. I don't know from day today what schedule is. I have to go into the league schedule each day to see. Oh well. I won't be shooting many long shots anymore, want to try and get all photos cropped right the first time in camera so I don't have to crop any when doing some post work. Thanks. Will email you soon to explain something.

What Jules said below.... plus, I also use an 85mm f/1.8 and get closer to the action. That 1.8 really lowers the ISO because it's 1 ⅔ more light than the f/2.8 is.

Yes these are under exposed by at least a full stop or more. What were your settings on these? 80-200 lens hmm what aperture does the lens have. Minimum for bb is 2.8 if you are not shooting with that don't waist your time. Stay home where it's warm. I know the gyms have terrible lighting and now your another 15 feet back, again go home unless your shooting with a 300mm 2.8. I don't like shooting beyond the half court from behind the basket with a 70-200 2.8. No cropping at all. Noise yes it's there and that's why no cropping.
The 85mm 1.8 is the way to go with lighting like this but the distance says no.
Good luck.

These could be fixed I think after exposure is corrected in post. Run them through TOPAZ AI to improve clarity and sharpness. I’ve processed many of these in the past. So don’t be discouraged

Thank you tomcat for looking in on my travelogue, I believe this is the first time I see you on one of my tours - I am glad to hear that you think that this presentation is valuable and that you like it.

I do keep all my albums, from which I source these images and more, on my photo website www.weberwest.weebly.com and I also have all my spreadsheets with the texts, at least for the newer series, in a special UHH travelogue file. I never thought of saving the entire sets anywhere else, not sure how I would do that.

Wishing you a good Sunday - Joe

Yeah, my son lives in NYC, near Columbia U. I've seen most of your other stuff from several visits, but these struck me more so because of the different angles and your interpretations. Thanks

No, you ask about the D500 indoors - One (The Volleyball picture was taken inside a High School gym the other was taken at the Golden One center with a D5) TWO DIFFERENT Indoor courts. The Football pictures were taken at TWO different HS football fields all with f2.8 lens on a D500. Still does NOT prove your point about needing an f1.8 lens. Most ALL the photographers I have been associated with over the past 12 years use f4 or f2.8 lens indoors and out to shoot sports. That doesn't mean that there are not some that use a f1.8 lens, I just don't know any. Post processing has a large impact on the pictures. Have a nice weekend.

The volleyball picture is not sharp, blurry, and has a lot of noise. So if this was from a D500, I would not use this as an example of successful low light shooting

Ok. Technically you didn’t post what I specifically asked for. With all of those pictures above, is there one shot in dimly light venues? And, you didn’t specifically state what camera you used for the arena shots and what the ISO values were.

So again, I ask you to please post shots from the D500 taken in low light where the ISO values are above 12,000.

Hey guys. I’m looking to upgrade from a D7100. I mostly take sports pics of my high school age children. I am wondering if any of you have experience with the D500 for indoor sports and what you like/dislike about it. Thank you so much.

You have gotten quite a lot of suggestions about the D500. But again, only you know where you are shooting and what the level of light is. If you have a dimly light gym, like a church, then the D500 will not work. But if you have a lot of bright lights, it will. Either way, you are going to need a lens that can open up to f/1.8. So beware....

I wish you the best of luck that you consider this decision carefully.

I use my D500 mostly for pre-game in Football & some Volleyball & basketball. (Did not have time to search all my 100,000 pictures From the last few years to show some basketball - However I did find a Volleyball one I used it for. All shot with either the f2.8 24-70 on a D500 or on the D5 with a f2.8 in doors at Golden One Arena. Hope this will give you an idea. Have a good day

This shows exactly what I was talking about with the D500 in low light. You are shooting in an arena that is brightly lit and not a gym. So with that tv lighting, you would get some good shots with the D500. But not in a dimly light high school gym, so I hope the original poster is aware that the lighting is everything and where you are shooting is not typical of most high schools.
