A great shot, John. What, exactly, is that "little fellow"? Probably just my 75 year-old vision, but I can't determine what's nesting in the bloom. Thanks.

T3i is a good entry level camera, but is quite old now, as is the EF 70-300 IS USM. Since you are a Canon gal, for your purposes I would look at the 80D, and a refurb from Canon if available within you price range: https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/eos-80d-body-refurbished , this a good price and comes with a one year warranty. Then I would look at the lens, and if you can stretch to it, the EF 100 - 400 L IS II. Supporting a local store is always good and the price shouldn't be too far off the standard price, but here's the refurb: https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/ef-100-400mm-f45-56l-is-ii-usm-refurbished

If you are interested in mirrorless then the EOS M5 or EOS M50 could be worth a look.

Good luck

Excellent advice. I bought the 80D about a year ago, and have been completely satisfied. It's an amazing camera, and if you can find a refurb from Canon at a price you can afford, I don't think you can go wrong. By the way, I love your butterfly image!

Interesting image, Greg! We know birds are a specialized line of dinosaurs going back to the time before the Big Bang off the Yucatan that killed most of their featherless relatives. This image strongly suggests the truth of that, those eyes being every bit as fearsome as those of the velociraptors portrayed in the original 'Jurassic Park.' Cool shot.

And a cool reply to the posting, Treepusher. Couldn't agree more--a remarkable image.

Such serenity. Your capture is a great example of why I love photography. You'll be able to re-live that magical moment time and time again. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I suggest you at least look into FastStone 6.4. It may not be the best, but as a beginner a few years ago, it proved to be very user-friendly, with an intuitive learning-curve. I've continued to use it, although I hope to begin learning Light Room this year. FastStone can be downloaded free, but they give you an opportunity to submit a donation ($25.00 suggested), which I do yearly. I did'n need a tutor with FastStone, but it's clear that Light Room--for this 75 year-old-student--will require some hands-on assistance.

Well, stated in the Photo Gallery rules:

"- Try to include the specifications of your gear and settings in the post accompanying the pictures. Stating aperture, shutter speed, ISO would be great. Even better would be to also include your body and lens specs. This really helps others learn what settings work in various scenarios."

This is exactly why I like to see the details posted. I learn a great deal by seeing how others hare captured an image. I also will post details when sharing an image. To me, a primary benefit of this forum should be to teach all of us to become better photographers.

davidp, I can see why you want this photo edited. It has great potential as a Christmas card.
if you can send the picture as a jpg to my personal email address: janddgloss@suddenlink.net , I'll fix the image. I've already gotten it edited, but am unable to attach to the Forum, due to my limited skills attaching images.
Hope you and your family have had a merry Christmas and are looking forward to a prosperous and happy New Year.

Davidp, I use FastStone Image Viewer 6.2. The cloning/healing tool makes challenges like yours fairly quick and easy. I'm sure you'll get a number of equally-effective suggestions. Also, if you post your image, I'm betting that there would be Hoggers who could fix your photo ASAP. Good luck!

use the printer mfg. ink or if you have a problem the will not back the printer. I spent thousands on my camera equipment, over a thousand on my printer, buy good paper and sell my prints so I want ink to not fade and last. buy cheep ink and see it fade hanging on the wall.

I agree. Often considered other ink sources, but for the reasons mentioned above have stuck with the printer mfg. ink.

Like this? It is a tree but a strange one its grown out horizontal and kicked round before deciding it wanted to go up, it's what attracted me initially, then i noticed the couple and shifted the attention from the tree in the foreground the leading lines of the trunk work well to lead you to them. I have no idea who they and i like i've kept them anonymous and the focal point of the scene.

Loved the first image, but agree that it was improved by the shading of the foreground tree. Beautifully composed and very emotional image.
