While still outside, take the memory card out, seal the camera and lens in an airtight plastic bag and wrap it up in your coat. After inside, and set the wrapped up camera aside. Download and work on your photos while camera warms up slowly.

I shoot kids hockey. I end up with many, many near identical shots as I shoot bursts while trying to get the perfect shot of a kid taking a shot. Some programs call them dups, but they’re not. One program, whose name I forget, had a option to separate photos by milliseconds of when they were taken. It was still a pain to use and the annual renewal fee turned me off. I still don’t have a satisfactory solution.

I am pondering options for cataract replacement. One of the drawbacks of multi focal is halos or rings around bright objects. Is this true? Is it a bother?
Also I have astigmatism across more than one axis the Toric lenses were not recommended because they’d only have a 50% chance of success for me. It seems that maybe getting rid of the primary astigmatism might be worthwhile. Thoughts?

This is one of those "once in a --------" shots and it needs to be denoised. Try the 30 trail of Topaz DeNoise and then delete the program. If you are like a lot of us, you will probably keep it. I tried it and did about 50-60 of my noisy shots and "saved" them the recycle bin.

I have since run it through both Topaz Denoise and Topaz Sharpen. They made a big improvement. I already owned Denise and I just bought Sharpen, too.

I think you should have waited for a better angle of the light as it's a little too direct.

That’s as good as it gets. I took 150 shots. If you think this one is too direct, check this one out. This is not lens diffraction.. I was wide open f5, 4 seconds ISO 5000. I think the starburst is coming directly from the lighthouses fresnel lens.

Split Rock Lighthouse beam right at you.

A nice photo wkocken! As a fellow "Minnesota'n" I remember seeing this lighthouse when I was a child and eating my heart out not being able to climb it. It was still an active lighthouse of the US Coastguard back then. I have photographed this light house enough to appreciate the effort you made to to shoot this fine photo. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. I’m a native Wisconsinite (Green Bay, actually) Eastern Wisconsin has Door County, but we have the North Shore! It is wonderful.

It has been on my bucket list, but I’d like to try it on a foggier or windier night, although my tripod was already being blown around a bit last week.

Beautiful shot; I've been there and seen the lighthouse, but almost invisible at night and and I've never before seen even a photo of the lighthouse when lit. I'm surprised the maintenance has been sufficient to use it even briefly.

For years the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald was unexplained, but a number of years ago some deep water explorers photographed the wreckage, and it appears that a boiler had exploded violently in extreme storm conditions, dooming the ship and it's crew.

Interesting theory. The primary theory I heard was open hatches allowed water to pour in. Another theory is that the design was flawed an the ship’s keel broke under the stress of being pounded by huge waves. There was a sister ship that was scrapped soon after, although this sounds like a conspiracy theory.

The Split Rock Lighthouse on the northwest shore of Lake Superior is lit only once a year and on special occasions. The annual event is on Nov. 10 to commemorate the sinking of the iron ore freighter, the Edmund Fitzgerald. The ship sank in heavy seas on Nov. 10, 1975. The actual cause has never been fully determined. The entire crew of 29 perished.
The lighthouse was built between 1907 and 1910. It sits on a 110 foot tall rocky outcropping and at the time of construction, there were no roads leading to the site. All of the materials were hoisted up from ships below. The lighthouse was used until 1969 when more modern navigation techniques made it obsolete.
The beacon stretching out over the dark water was difficult to photograph that night. It wasn’t visible until well after dark and since it rotates, it only shines visibly for a few seconds at a time. It was also quite windy. This exposure was f5, 4 seconds at ISO 5000.

Ditto on the long lens as not being useful on the bus trip. However, it may come in as useful on the boat. You’ll see eagles, seals and if your lucky, a whale or two.

Canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6. it's an efs lens but built better than the regular kit lens. Very good images. Gets wider than the often recommended 24-105L.
