That's one nice thing about buying the disk instead of the download version. You can always reinstall and update the system if all else fails. You might need to store your Lightroom library on a separate media though so it doesn't get written over.

I've been following this thread. The same thing happened to me more or less out of the blue after a long period (many months) of satisfactory operation. Tried all sorts of things including a virus scan to get the thumbnails to display in the library while importing. Everything else, i.e. develop and print worked fine so the images did get imported, just not displayed in library. Finally, I uninstalled LR5.6, reinstalled it from the original disk, updated it to 5.6 and everything has been fine since (perhaps 10 imports so far). Imports were raw images (all that I use), also from a D7000, Computer is a Dell 620 that has been in use for something like 2 years. OS is Windows 7, Home Edition with Service Pack 1.

Thanks Bobbyr, if all else fails I'll give it a try. Have to download off Adobe store.

Back up your Catalogue
Close Lightroom
Navigate to your previews folder, it will usually be in Pictures\Lightroom and will be called
"Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata"
Change the name to "Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata.old"

Now open Lightroom and goto the Library
Menus > Library > Previews > Build Standard-Size Previews

The previews should rebuild )this could take a while depending on how many images you have)

If all is well, Back up your catalogue

The reason for renaming the old version was to preserve things in case anything goes wrong. The old file can be deleted if everything works out OK.

I'll give it a try. Thanks. I'll let you know what happens.

Double click on the image (centre of the grey area) to enlarge. That should kick off the preview rebuild. If that does not work, report back here.

Also check your catalogue settings, Edit > Catalog settings > File handling tab.
Try changing the Standard Preview size to 1440 pixels, Medium Quality

I changed to 1440. When I click on thumbnail in the develop mode the thumbnail comes up but when I download another card I have to gothru and click on each pic individually?

Assuming that by "Downloading" you mean IMPORTING into lightroom have you tried to import a JPG file?

In your catalog settings, what do you have your preview cache set to?

If using Windows, did you uninstall LR completely, reboot and reinstall?

If you have been using LR for a while, you are probably well versed in using the Import screen.

You have not explained clearly what is happening - do the images appear in the Library completely grey but with the file name showing?

Yes, I see the nef number and the pic is grey

What camera are you using? Are you importing raw or JPG files?

Can you explain your importing process?

Elements 12 is a "BROWSER" so it will see thumbnails of files in any folder.... Lightroom is NOT a BROWSER, so pointing it at a directory/folder of files will NOT result in getting to the images. You must import them first into Lightroom's catalog.

Using nikon d7000. Have used lightroom since it first came out. Am downloading as usual with nef files raw.

I have newest lightroom 5 but for a week am unable to get thumbnails for my downloads. The picture gets downloaded, but no thumbnails so I do not know what pic it is. I have tried downloading lightroom, but that hasn't worked. I have Elements 12 and it's thumbnails work fine. Haven't received any help from Adobe except to go to community...nothing there. I have made sure everything is check marked in the page set up. Any ideas?
