Paul's is two miles down the street and just two miles south of Silvo's on Hawthorne Ave, Torrance, CA. Both are long time, reputable dealers. Always got good answers to questions asked before buying.

I always thought Paul's was a little more expensive than most so this comment was a surprise. I have bought camera bags, filters, batteries and other minor items because their selection is usually much better than other local biz. And if I can avoid the risk and hassle of on-line purchases, I prefer to go local.

I've been with AFIE since 1969 and never had a complaint. Five military movements and what AF didn't pay, AFIE did.

Armed Forces Insurance also will insure camera and gear in your personal/household insurance. Let us know if you get a quote from both them and USAA (I have cars with USAA & Home with AFIE).

I was in the Pentagon in 1986-89 and my first of three jobs was working the Shuttle VAFB program (hqs funding, programmatic, schedule, etc) after the Shuttle accident in Jan 1986. Shuttle SLC-6 wasn't cancelled only due to funds; it was a change in DOD space launch policy to move back to unmanned expendable launch vehicles and off the Shuttle. Too much risk to be dependent on one launch vehicle, the Shuttle, for all our military access to space. DOD policy since early 1980s had been to design and fly all military spacecraft from the Shuttle. As a result of the Shuttle accident out of KSC, DoD could not launch any satellites for over 40 months. My good friend, Brett Watterson, and my boss, Pete Aldridge (SECAF) were to fly on that first VAFB Shuttle mission. Aldridge led the charge to get $11B from Congress for risk reduction and to move DOD spacecraft back on ELVs. VAFB SLC-6 funds were used for a lot of this redesign effort and to acquire new ELVs, as well as to redesign satellites to be launch-able from two different ELVs. So, yes, funding was part of the reason Shuttle never flew out of VAFB, but there were other important contributing reasons like risk (of a repeat launch failure and using a Centaur (hydrogen/oxygen upper stage), policy (no single point failure modes) and politics (eliminate DOD dependence on a NASA (civilian ride)).

What a great assortment of advice. I think with that one can walk the delicate path of photos or no, whether for family, friend or for a stranger. My experience--A close friend died in Jan...he was a weekly golfing buddy until he moved a two hr drive away. He was retired military as am I and his services were with him in uniform and conducted at a national cemetery. His granddaughter managed all arrangements and I offered numerous previously taken pictures for the funeral video; we had taken them together on golfing trips and visits over about 12 yrs.
It was a military funeral with honor guard, bagpiper, and rifle salute. I stood away from the gathering at the cemetery and used Nikon 24-70mm (and PS post-processing) to record the ceremony--escort of the casket from hearse by honor guard, pastor's final remarks, folding of the flag and presentation of it to the family, laying of roses by all the family on the casket, and then departure of the casket to the final burial site. Friends and family had traveled from parts of CA, AZ and as far away as Maine. Many had not seen the family or the others for years. Several retired military wore their uniform out of respect to our friend. The family told me later how grateful they were they I had captured these photos of their husband, father, grandfather and brother in his final service to our Nation. Having a record of our Nation's final thank you to him for his service was a great comfort to them.
This was my experience. Every situation is different. The thoughtfulness and respectful ideas in all the comments here give me a feeling that all of you would find the right way to perform this service or turn it down.

Tried to download faststone viewer and my virus security SW flagged me off...said this site was on the ALERT list. Anyone know what goes with that?
I'm standing down on this download until I know whether this site has been corrupted.

Tin whiskers do occur...in spacecraft electronics...after some years on orbit. This is a phenomena discovered in the 1970s and the reason space electronics are now designed with materials that eliminate this weakness. I was responsible for satellite ops at PANAMSAT in early 2000s and we had several Sats that experienced this. NOT NICE!

I believe it is peculiar to the space environment, but can't swear it wouldn't occur on earth. It should be documented if it is true.
