As a Hog, sorry I can't remember who, mentioned Project Gutenberg recently, anybody interested in reading an account of this episode in the Civil War written by one of the participants should download the following book:

CAPTURING A LOCOMOTIVE:
A HISTORY
OF
SECRET SERVICE
IN THE LATE WAR.

BY
REV. WILLIAM PITTENGER.

Don't expect Disney, or Buster Keaton.

I took some pics of the 2014 Tour de France when it approached London. No uphill bits so they were moving really fast. Used Canon 550d with Tamron 55-200mm, 1/1000 sec, f10, ISO 800, and was happy with most of my shots. Your main problem could be with the crowd, if you are in a good spot everybody else will be there. Even if you get to the front you will have people leaning in front of you, the mobile phone and tablet users are the worst, and unless the road is barriered, you will have people edging out into the road as well. If possible take something to stand on to lift you above them, that way you don't have to be right at the front, and it will be safer. Pros often take a small step ladder when they anticipate being in a crowd.

Speaking from ignorance, (mine, that is), is it possible that shooting raw your 380 shots have filled the 16gb cf card? The camera has not indicated a full card as you still had plenty of room on your sd card shooting jpeg.

I've bought two cameras and several lenses from MPB in the UK. They give an excellent service, and I have been pleased with the second-hand kit I have purchased from them. To the best of my knowledge they do not sell grey market products.

I use my old CZJ and Takumar M42 lenses on EOS 500d and 550d, I started with a simple adaptor but later added a focus confirm chip. Using the "bare" adaptor I set the camera to AV and let the camera set the speed; the camera read and displayed the aperture correctly and adjusted the speed to suit. When I used the chipped adaptor the camera showed f1.4, and overexposed everything. I dug out my venerable Weston V, and reverted to full Manual settings, then somebody on the Hog described their use of the Auto ISO setting, so now on those old lenses I set to M with auto ISO. It works.

I got them all except the nails, and I'm a Brit living in the UK where we can't even own a handgun.

Didn't want to make this a big thing, it's just that we were bombed-out of our house, and the row of houses behind ours totally destroyed, before the US even recognised that there was a war.

Japanese air attack on Pearl Harbor took place on December 7th 1941, so I'll stand by my earlier observation.

Loved the pictures, the B17 was undoubtedly a great aircraft, and was flown by many brave young men who suffered appalling losses, BUT it was not in use from the start of WW2, which began in 1939. I believe that the USA only declared war in December 1941, and the first raid by B17s was on French Railway yards in 1942.

If Bram Boy thinks that the 18-55mm does not include a focal length of 35mm then Canadian maths must be different from any that I learnt. Get the 50mm f1.8 and enjoy using a reasonably fast prime lens, it will make you think a bit more about framing your shots than using a zoom, and that can only improve your knowledge and enjoyment of photography.

Good on yer, mate, your turn to laugh. Looks like we'll have to go back to South Africa for some more batsmen. Don't think we'll get much of a trade in price for KP though.

I believe that the Witnesses believe that they will not go to heaven, but will be re-born on a paradise earth. Things get a bit vague after that. The easy cop-out they use is that it is not for them to know at this stage, and that Jehovah's plans are for Him alone to know, all they need is faith.

My wife is a Jehovah's Witness, when any of her "brothers" or "sisters" call I invite them in for a coffee. My theory, which I ALWAYS tell them, is that while they are talking to me they won't be annoying anybody else. No, they will never convert me.

Mind your P's and Q's, should have been p's and q's, lowercase, and comes from printing from movable type. The letters are "reversed" to look at, and the p and q could be misread. I was a compositor for 35 years.

Thanks, Testie, probably only the Brits and Aussies understood the comment anyway.
