Late comer here, but what a great topic!
I can't add much, Primary lenses-70/200-24/70-100macro with ring flash. All f/2.8. 5D MKII Camera. Except for ceremony always have at least one off camera flash, indoors and out (Also love catchlights hate raccoon eyes). With flash my camera shutter never goes above 160th, which creates problems outside with bright light, I never go above ISO 400, which creates problems indoors in low light. If nothing is moving fast I'll drag shutter as low as 1/20 to add atmosphere. Most single portraits f/2.8, couples f/4...matter of fact I rarely go above f/4, My lights aren't powerful enough outdoors, and my ISO is too low indoors. One thing I do in group shots/family-4 or more rows...I backup. like 15'@35mm sometimes more. I have to crop heavily in Pp, (lucky I have a FF) but no problem with DOF (approx 16').
I Don't use tripod a whole lot, but when I do, like group shots, I'll use 'Live View' and zoom in 10x to dial in my focus. I too use BBF,so I can quickly switch between manual and auto focus-and shooting in Manual, lets me quickly meter the light without messing with my focus.
Also shoot RAW-use color checker on portraits with a light meter (esp bride).
Oh, I try to used live view during ceremony too, my shutter (mirror slap) is soooo loud, it even annoys me!

Oh boy! I feel your pain! (I've been hemorrhaging money the last couple years, & I have a voice activated light stand that points out my blunders before I know I made one!)
I also am fond of my Yongnuo lights- and one of the main reasons is the cost. When accidents like this happen thank goodness it wasn't a couple canon speed lights (but when your hemorrhaging money, it hurts just as bad!).

Ed uses a Qflash type setup, and I almost have enough saved to pull the trigger, then I saw this AD200... I Really like the idea, the weight, the battery. But it will mess with my trigger set-up..have to change it up... And no telling what's around the corner :)
Ed's set up has lasted 50yrs or so... Might just stick to that.

I'm a little late to the discussion, but talking about flashes, I'm really thinking hard on either a couple Godox AD200's, or a Quantum QFlash.
I really want a bare bulb, flash for fill.. and I always struggle outdoors in bright light.
With a bracket, the Godox can double up to =400ws, or with the right battery the Quantum can do 400ws. I'd like the option of on camera, but the Godox may not be the best for that, but Having 2 flashes that could be combined as one..esp for outdoor -sunny-shots, or separated would be great.
Just wondering if you guys have any experience-suggestions or concerns with either of these?
Quality wise, the Godox is probably the weak link.

For quick and dirty, I'd probably try to put a key light, on the side of the bride held by assistant, 90° or more, from camera position, to show the details in dress...then an on camera fill to bring up shadows.
But, what if you went ahead and tried a silhouette, maybe in front of one window, bodies apart..slight kiss?
You could even try a light behind them, for a halo...silhouette effect? :)

My two cents.... I like the side lighting coming from camera left, it is showing the details in his shirt, so I think it would also bring out details in the dress, But I would use a fill on or close to camera(1 to 1 1/2stops below), and maybe another light on the right side(1 stop below), as a rim/hair light(it shouldn't effect background), and you might put a light behind (equal to or greater than ambient light on left)--a kinda halo effect might look good, and also not affect Background.
Looks like you will need to experiment. Best of luck!

Again, I don't work FOR shootproof, but use them. A nice feature is that nobody can look at any gallery that I don't want to see it. The link takes them ONLY to the gallery I want them to see.

I have enough time to prepare for the marathon this year. To save the aggravation of cutting out a few thousand strips, I may go ahead and get cards like yours, and put the QR code on the back. Of course, anything left over will be wasted money, but saving time cutting them on a paper cutter is probably worth that to me.
Again, I don't work FOR shootproof, but use them. ... (show quote)

I like that QR code idea of yours, I was thinking of having cards made up with a space for the code, and maybe just getting some sheets of small square stickers for the printer...If I had some for an event. maybe just stick it to their name badge ? :)

........... When you say you make up cards, can you elaborate? You order cards from a source, write on the back of your business card, or just use good hand writing on card stock?

My Cards are ordered, with a space on back to handwrite.... I'll attach a couple pics...
On my Website, I have to have pics in a "Gallery"...So clients have to have a 'Gallery ID' & Password to get in. Also, Most of the pics are hidden from visitor view, so they have to search (a link I call "Your Fotos") just to locate them.
I do a lot of Photoshop Composites, editing/repair, & (comes in waves)... editing of other photographers pics (Portrait/Commercial/Wedding).
So they don't want anyone to see their pics on my Website.
& my Cards have to be somewhat 'generic' in nature, because I might be at an event, and have to hand one out for a Photoshop project, then turn around and hand another out to someone wanting copies of wedding pics, because they live out of state.

It's a work in progress.. And I think I'll steal some of the other ideas you have been recommended :)

jaysnave....I too am not too happy with my online system, But here is what I do for events:
I’m using Zenfolio, I have cards made up, that on the backside have my web address, My contact mail, and a space for “Gallery ID” & “Password”. Customers can also put an app on their phone:
If I don’t have time to set up a gallery for the event beforehand, I can easily set the parameters at the event. I’ll get the organizer, let them suggest a gallery name for their event, & make up a password - then fill out a few cards and hand them to the organizer...he/she has a few they can hand out, and they know where to point others for more cards (Usually I have a table set up). Then I take a cell picture of the card (So i don’t lose the info)...and have an assistant fill out several more...some for the table & others to carry and hand out.
I also ‘binge edit’..If I have time I can set up and start uploading pics at the event, but otherwise I try to have some up on the gallery the next day.
Custom edits and composites are available on request.
Depending on the event...sometimes the web site is just a way to distribute the pics...but prints are available..mugs..magnets etc...
Otherwise, the thumbnails are provided with set prices for prints.
I generally require an email for anyone logging into the site, which works great for personal requests(I can go in and see what pics they have downloaded or purchased).
For weddings it’s a good ‘proofing gallery’ before I meet with BG, and a good way for guests to purchase pics or make their own albums.
What I Like about this system...Many times at an event, I’ll be approached by one or several people- wanting their ‘own’ pics, say of coworkers, family, or themselves...I make a new card up, and they will have their own private pics to look at after the event. Many times this has led to another gig..of their family or company event.
The biggest thing I Don’t like about Zenfolio, Is not being able to let others “Upload” to a gallery. like second shooters.
At a few events, esp school reunions, I have offered to share ‘everyone’s’ pics from an event on my web site (I still profit from prints and services, even if downloads are free)...But everyone has to send me their prints to upload, which is a real pain!
Anyways, maybe you can use some of this, I like alot of the other ideas already shared..and I need to do alot of adjusting.
....I should add, that my website is more of a marketing tool than a money maker. I usually hand deliver my prints - but it reaches people I never met(except maybe I took their pic at an event),and gives them way to contact or refer me.

I certainly will.. So far, I know it's a private church retreat type place. It's almost 4hrs from me. But arrangements are being made so I can get in and spend some time...hopefully within the next month.
The reservations have been reserved, but, it is now in limbo, because the dress won't be in for at least 3 more months...so luckily I'm not rushed. Looks like the wedding is on hold, probly til next May.
But, if I can pull this off, it may lead to a semi steady gig, I'm hoping. :)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts jaysnave! I needed that.
I like that idea of lighting the rocks & moving to one side or the other...I'll test that out.
I'm also thinking of trying to get the crosses to go into silhouette, that would be really the easier route to finalize in Pp, but I'll have to see what effect it has overall.
I'm also thinking this might be a good Black & White ;)

Mainly, ..You guys have been kinda quiet, and I wanted to nudge your noggins!
I had been chewing on this location a couple days, or, gritting my teeth. Now I'm really glad I put it up, my noggin got nudged! Thanks again!

Thanks guys! For the great tips and advise!
At least this is not a big hurry, so I have some time to work out and try some different approaches... There will be several shots outside, and they want sunset photos by the lake, So I’ll also be scrambling to keep up with the ambient as it falls....I feel the stress already, And I think I see that Murphy’s law, looking for an openning.
I have a battery pack for 2 strobes (400ws) - I’ve been able to arrange a visit for the venue in the near future, And looks like I’ll have 2-3 helpers, & a second shooter.
I’m going to try some ‘victim’ testing - And I’ll be sure to stay away from the red on the crosses!
Thought I’d try several different shots, with just the crosses, using some lighting and different angles, as ‘stock footage’ -to splice in with Photoshop if the need arises...They really want those included in some way.
I’m planning on having a Lumadyne or qflash - (even if I have to rent one)...as a powerful/broad fill flash, and try to set it up in the way Ed suggested. They also want sunset pictures by the lake, which will probly include the wedding party...So the more light I can drag around-the better.
The ‘mottled light coming through the leaves’ is a big concern, I’d rather have the fill in the 1:2 range, but if it’s ‘speckled’ light - think I’ll match the ambient with the flash, try not to blow out the (expensive)dress, then cut the exposure with the shutter and photoshop in the crosses.
I’d rather not move them out into the sun, but I’ll try making a PVC scrim to hold over them-and test that too.
Thanks again for giving me more ideas- the more things I can come up with, the more options I’ll have if Murphy tries anything :)

Ok time to put on your thinking caps... Outdoor wedding ceremony up by these crosses, At this time of day(as shot-could be as early as 2pm or as late as 5pm).
They want to be up in the shade, but are open to moving out into the sun...
I'm worried about 'Fill Lighting' & no crosses coming out of heads. I'm thinking...the crosses: Maybe put 1-2 lights at the bottom and shoot upwards to give them some separation~ maybe even throw a red Gel on them?
the ceremony: Maybe throwing a light on left, between pastor and groom...to help light pastor and front of Bride's dress? And maybe a hair/rim light on bride? &-or maybe a light down low shooting up on the dress?
And a fill light near camera to remove face shadows? Maybe 200mm lens, to bring crosses closer, but easier to position away from top of heads?
Gotta tell you, I'm not thrilled or looking forward to this!

Any observations, tips, suggestions - Appreciated!
