Although this is my first post here I've been following along for a few weeks. Figure it's about time to stop peeping and join in a little. I'm a fairly new DSLR user, about a year and a half, before that just point and shoot experience. I hope to learn some during my visits and maybe I can pass on a thing or too also.

Welcome aboard, John! You cannot help but learn things here, as everyone is always willing to share tips and tricks.

Happy shooting!

I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether it is better for me to get the Tamron17-50mm f/2.8 or the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8
Going to DC and want to grab dome good night shots and the 17-50mm was recommended to me. I already have the Canon 50mm f/1.8 I already have. Can't afford the Canon lenses really and not that good at understanding them yet. So if someone could give me some opinions...I have been reading and reading and reading.

I own the non-VC Tammy 17-50mm and LOVE it. Very sharp pics and good low-light performance. No experience with the other version which has VC, but not sure how much benefit Vibration Control would be on this focal range. but it is significantly more money.

Looked at one yesterday at local camera shop. VERY nice piece of equipment. D7000 is much more camera, better built and literally only $100 more right now than the 5200.

Follow the "Nikon D5200 user any suggestions???" thread ...
Riddler just bought one last week, and may have some comments ...

Well, finally made it to the local camera shop yesterday. Picked up the Tammy 18-270mm. Nice lens, haven't had too much time with it yet but am going outside after work today for maiden voyage on my old D40.

While I was at the shop though, I just had to play with the D7000. I am now trying to decide whether to stick with plan to purchase D5200, or perhaps go with the D7000. Current price for that body is now only $100 more than the D5200! Seems like a solid camera, but not sure I need that much horsepower, being a hobbyist at this point ...

Looking forward to hearing more comments from you on your 5200, Riddler. Spending some quality time with it yet?

I have the Tammy 17-55mm 2.8 and it is a solid performer. I think it was only around $400 with a rebate last year.

For me, it was much better than the 18-55mm kit lens included with the camera, but depends on what you're using it for I guess. The low-light ability of this Tamron and autofocus speed is pretty good too, from what I've found.

Again, I realize a fairly subjective opinion. Like anyone will tell you, Nikon lens quality and build is usually superior to alternatives like Sigma and Tamron, but if $$ matter ...

So, then, which brand (website if you have it) of aftermarket batteries did you find to be the most reliable?

Just curious.

I agree with most everyone here - do not purchase aftermarket batteries - stick with Nikon! Usually cannot go wrong with a battery designed and sold by the manufacturer ...

Yes, I see your comments within the text. :)

I have to agree, this looks like a fairly decent piece of glass for the money. Had planned to go demo one today, but alas, work got in the way and my customer appointment (within walking distance of the camera shop) was postponed until next week. Plus we got another batch of snow last night, and since the shop is an hour away, I figured just as well. I really do want to take advantage of that rebate prior to end of month if I end up purchasing this Tammy.

How's the weight? Feel pretty balanced? Do you have a battery grip on your camera body? Just curious, as I have one on this D40 now, and it does seem to give a little more balance to heavier lenses.

That other Nikon 18-300mm I'm considering is HEAVY. Since my wife will be using this too, I'm not sure she would appreciate the fact that heavier lens usually translates into better glass / construction. :) May be just a wee bit too much for entire tennis match ...

I too just joined the Hog recently!

FANTASTIC group of folks here - very helpful and lots of experience with all kinds of cameras, lenses, software, etc.

Trading up my OLD D40 for the D5200 when I can get it at my local camera shop (they tell me sometime in February or March).

Tomorrow's activities include a visit there to pick up some new glass - Tamron 18-270mm or something in the Nikon line (18-200mm or 18-300mm) for my wife shooting our kid's tennis tourneys.

I have the Tamron 2.8 17-50mm and LOVE it, so I am hoping perhaps to add one of their super-zooms to my collection.

Once you get the new toy, start saving your pennies for good glass! Majority of folks on this site seem to share the opinion of all the pros I've talked to - invest in good lenses. Period.

Excellent!

Let me know what you think of the D5200, as I am looking to purchase that same model in next 6 weeks prior to annual Spring Break trip with the family.

Agreed, great book! I've used Elements for 5 years now, and just picked up the combo pack with Premier Elements 11 for video. Good stuff and was only $79 at amazon.

Nice pictures! Looks like outside my window this week, what with all the snow and cold that came in.

I am going to go look at both the Tammy 18-270mm and a Nikon 18-300mm Thursday this week at our local camera shop. They are really good about letting you try out the glass on your own body, so I am bringing my camera to try both of those and see what kind of vibe I get :) Nikon also has a cheaper 18-200mm I think which is a little less expensive. I want to take a look at that one too.

One of them is coming home with me ...

Is that $100 rebate still in play on the Tamron for sure this month?

So, after reading your comments, I researched the Nikon products, since I am shooting an old D40 now, but purchasing the D5200 next month when it hits my local camera shop. My son and I use Nikon for the most part, but their lenses are just SO expensive, compared to the Tamron glass. He has a business, and is not as concerned with that cost, as mostly it's written off.

I see Nikon has an 18-300 tele ... $1,000. Any experience with that one? Looks solid, but should be for a grand I guess. Goal is just to get something for shooting my kids' tennis tourneys, without having to constantly switch lenses for the up-close group shots. (My wife is somewhat a technical zero, and ends up taking most of those ... I don't see her doing well having to change lenses in the field) :)

Your thoughts?

Getting ready to pick up the 18-270mm Tammy next week! $100 rebate is still in play, so that makes it $550 at my local camera shop.

After reading everyone's comments here, it looks as if majority of folks are quite satisfied. I have the Tamron 2.8 17-50mm and LOVE it! Just wanted something for my wife to use for our kid's tennis tournaments, and not have to switch lenses to get that close up range on the court.

I really like the speed with which Tamron's rebates work - usually 7 days after sending the form in and online warranty registration of the lens you have your money back. And you really cannot beat the 6-year warranty.

Looking forward to adding this to my toolkit!

Fantastic PICS!!!! I live in Brighton, and we go to that Balloonfest each and every year - what a blast!

You mention Jackson as a kid ... I grew up there. What High School did you graduate from?

Ever heard of the International Dog House restaurant over on Lansing Ave and North Street?
