'Tis a quandary, not sounding promising, unless the battery contacts might be dirty.
By any chance might there be a factory reset button? I'm guessing it doesn't stay on long enough to go through the menu.
I tried that, and after a series of on/offs I worked through the menus to the reset screen (the menu kept the last screen each time I got to it), but it wouldn't respond.

Battery need charging? Or fresh batteries?
Not knowing what you are using or is required, my H-1 will NOT work with alkalines, they have to be NiMHs.
(It behaves the same way with alkalines or almost dead batteries.)
Thanks for your response. The HX80 has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that shows a full charge. I also tried a second third-party battery with the same results.
My daughter's HX80 compact camera has developed a problem. When you power it on, the lens begins to extend, stops and retracts. It repeats this three times, then the screen says to power off and back on. Doing this causes the cycle to repeat. Sometimes the camera will power itself off after the three lens cycles.
I have removed the battery, left it out for ten minutes and put it back in with the same results.
I called Sony, but they're closed for the weekend, and their esupport seems worthless for this device.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
I just finished reading an excellent biography of Weegee, "FLASH, The Making of WEEGEE THE FAMOUS" by Christopher Bonanos. Highly recommended.
I agree, it is an excellent picture.
But, and I had to check, the bird is an anhinga.
This one may have been PSed.
We have Comcast in our town. Two weeks ago we upgraded to their 200 Mbps internet from 25Mbps. The difference is noticeable when downloading really large files. The best part is that we now have a package including a DVR and landline phone, at a cost almost the same as we were paying for cable and the slower internet. Of course, that cost will go up in a year and again a year after that, but we are no longer paying Verizon $93 a month for landline that we hardly use anymore.
I did have to buy a $30 USB Wi-Fi adapter to access the higher speed from my less than two year-old laptop, but now I consistently get 230+ speeds via Wi-Fi.
Making a square or rectangular diaphragm would be extremely difficult, if not impossible.
Here's a shot of an adult piebald deer I took in the Watchung Reservation, Berkeley Heights, New Jersey in November, 2010. Shot with a Canon A720 compact.
No offense, but how does this relate in any way, shape, or form to the OPs situation?
The man is dealing with a serious life issue, and you just throw in a totally unrelated news story.
WTF??
