My son would like to get a mirrorless camera so he can hike easier with it. Currently using a Canon 6D which gets heavy. Can someone recommend a mirrorless camera that is high quality under $1,000? Thanks!

Panasonic G85 5axis stabilization no low pass filter. 4K video weather seal comes with a 12-60mm lens $800 can’t be beat for the price!

I would love the Olympus Pen F for $999 but then it can't take a picture at that price. At that price it's mirrorless and lensless.

The Olympus refurbed site has them at that price often

Check out the Nikon P1000. I understand it's a bit heavy, but a real "power house". I have a pretty good Nikon camera along with some professional lenses, plus a P100 and a P510. I would love to have a P1000 as a go to camera. If the P1000 is too heavy, check out the p900. It also seems like a great camera.

Probably the best suggestion, so far. The suggested Panasonic system is seems huge, in comparison.

Are you looking for Interchangeable Lens cameras or bridge cameras. If he's hiking, wants light weight and doesn't want to fiddle with lenses, bridge camera is the best way to go.

Checkout Olympus,Sony and Fuji. I love my Fuji. Also buy used from a reputable dealer like KEH. I only buy used lenses.

Canon M50.
Uses ALL your lenses perfectly with NO loss of functions and don't slow down.

Or the Canon M5, which is due for a MII soon though.

It is being heavily discounted right now for this purpose.

This way you have all your lenses work natively in the Canon system (Yes there is an adapter) so there are no glitches trying to adapt them to an off brand camera etc. so he can borrow lenses.

I would get the M5 with the 18-150mm

It is only 899 now and that is about 1/2 price for a great hiking camera for your son yet as stated it is compatible with the entire array of EF/EF-S lenses you might have.

They’re everywhere! They’re everywhere! Just pick one and have fun. I suggest used or refurb first to get the feel.

Olympus OMD e-M5 II. Weatherproof, dustproof, 5-axis in camera stabilization, compact. Attach the 25mm 1.8 lens and you’re there. Saw it for $799 at B&H. I adore mine!
