This week I'm upgrading from my Nikon D3300 to a Nikon D7200! I'm excited. Anybody have any advice regarding things I might pay attention to that would help smooth out the learning curve?

Lucky you, Brayyd!!! I know what it's like when GAS hits - but that sounds like an excellent upgrade. I've had my D7100 for just over a year now - and my D5100 for just over 3 years. (Thinking of trying to sell the D5100 & replacing it with a refurbished D5300 as I still want one DSLR with a vari-angle screen)
Anyway I think you will find the menu on your D7200 quite a bit different to that of the D3300 - (which was very beginner-friendly), but you will get used to it and grow into it & it will be great; - there's so many more options to explore - and you will find the twin dials an added bonus. ENJOY!!!

As mentioned by another UHH member, it may not be worth the cost of repairing it - but do see if you can get a quote. Also, as another UHH member stated; do take a look at the Nissin Flashes. I have the Di622 Mk2 and the newer Di600 that I use with my Nikon DSLR's, and plan to purchase the Nissin i40 specially for its hi-speed sync facility - to use with my Nikon D7100.
I've found these Flash units to perform well & are good value-for-money.
(I've been using the Di622 Mk2 for 3 years now - without any problems)

Hi, I would say you're safe with the deal from B & H; they are reliable up-front vendors. (I tend to buy from them - and from adorama). The DSLRs in my family: D5100, D5200, D7100 & D3200 all have a genuine battery and a non-genuine spare; Watson brand in the case of DSLR's I've purchased from B & H, and Power 2000 brand from adorama. No problems so far. At least 2 of the DSLR's and 2 extra lenses were Refurbished items, all of which looked as good as new; (not a mark on them), and work perfectly. . . so I've been very pleased with my purchases so far and will always go both vendors.

Hi, have you considered using BluRay discs ??? As you so rightly mentioned any Hard drive can fail. A single-layer Bluray disc ho9lds 25GB of data. Last year I bought an ASUS (USB) external BluRay Drivefrom B & H Photo. They also have a good selection of discs - including archival quality grade. The other option would likely be to back up to 2 drives, thus mirroring your back-ups. (Previous to having my Bluray drive I would leave 1 copy on my laptop hard Drive & backup to an external drive. Now I'm in the process of backing up from the external drive onto Bluray, still leaving the files/folders on the ext Hard Drive as well).
Hope the above suggestion is useful.

Hi, just to say: The Picton Castle called here at St. Helena Island, (South Atlantic), in mid/late February. I should have a few photos of it at anchor in James Bay somewhere on my hard drive.

Hi, you say you'd rather not shell out for a D7100 for your granddaughter. Have you looked at sites like adorama.com or B & H Photo Video??? They do refurbished Nikon & Canon DSLR's - and lenses; - go check their prices. If you still cant stretch to a refurbished D7100 I would suggest you look at the Nikon D5200; more resolution and focussing points than the D5100 - and a bit smaller & lighter than the D7100. Hope this helps.

A very good friend invited us to their daughters wedding. I was told to please leave my camera home.
when asked why, They said they wanted me to enjoy the day and not worry about taking pictures.

The photographer they hired, used up his batteries in the church. He had another set in a charger. He
switched batteries and kept shooting.

when we got to the reception, he missed the father daughter dance because he had to go in the back where he had his charger and two batteries from the church charging.

It wasn't much after that , he shot all his pics with out on board flash. He did have flash on a tripod but with all the people moving across the dance floor he didnt use it too much.

How many batteries should you take to a shoot like that?
( I have 8 they came as a set with the charger)

This guy seemed to only have 4. I tried to talk to the guy, but got nothing but a blank stare from him. I hope he still got a lot of great pics , and I should know better, I usually take the camera everyplace I go..... ( its a sickness I think)

The guy they hired doesn't sound like he's much good at all, - that coming from me: - (I regard myself as an amateur/enthusiast). I shoot using APSC (DX) sensor DSLRs; - a Nikon D7100 & D5200, slung on a Cotton Carrier Vest System. I have 1 spare battery for each DSLR, plus the chargers with me. I have 3 Nissin Flash Guns with Duracell rechargeable AA batteries, plus 3 charged spare sets & 3 x 4 packs of alkaline AA batteries. My wife or my daughter will assist me, arranging the groups for the photo shoots and handing mr gear as required. On a typical Wedding we start shooting at 3pm/3.30pm - and wont finish until 11pm or later - AND I've never run out of battery power! - in fact I remember 1 wedding I shot in December of last year the Duracell 2400mAh AA batteries in my Flash lasted the whole wedding. (I typically shoot 350+ photos at a wedding.

If you can go to a shop & actually try both cameras out you will then be in a better decision to make a choice.
The D5300 has built-in Wi Fi & GPS; - (do you need that)? It also reproduces very accurate colours - and may have slightly higher resolving power. The D7100 however has more facilities built into it, including the option to fine-tune the focus of any lens you attach to it, so is a camera you can "grow in to" - (though it doesn't have a Vari-angle screen).
I have a D5100 and a D7100. I miss the Vari-angle screen when using the D7100 - but like the camera for the extra facilities/options it has.

Congratulations on your purchase; the D7100 is a darned nice camera, (I've had mine since July 2014). Cant remember regarding the Beep when using BBF as I played around with it a while ago but decided to go back to focussing via the shutter release button. (I've turned the Beep off in my settings anyway as I often shoot in churches & alongside a videographer. What I have done - (and you may find useful) is to set it so your focus point/s illuminate red in the viewfinder when focus is achieved. (I shoot mostly in Aperture Priority mode and mostly use a single focus point. Do take time to go through the Users Manual - and enjoy your camera.
ALSO: Don't know if you get it where you are - but I found N PHOTO magazine over a year ago; (a UK publication), its dedicated to Nikon users and I have found a wealth of information in it.

I have bought genuine Nikon batteries - and Power 2000 brand for my D5100 and D7100 DSLRs. Got them from adorama I think, (I remember checking adorama and on B&H Photo Video). Anyway the point is they worked OK, no problems.

I can't comment as regards sales volumes - or the ratio of sales between new, refurbished and used, but:
I can say I've bought refurbished Nikon DSLR's & lenses from reputable sellers: (B & H photo Video and Adorama) and all items I bought looked like new and have worked faultlessly.

Personally I feel you cant go far wrong with the newest Sandisk Extreme SD catds and the Transcend Ultimate (600x) SD cards; best balance of price & performance, and IMHO, trusted & reliable.

All good advice here. I'd add: also get a Rubber Lens Hood, - one of those flexible, collapsible ones that you can screw on to the filter thread on the front of your lens. You then rest this against the glass: (window/fish tank, etc). It stops light leaking in. Very useful if you're taking photos at an aquarium and need to use the flash.

I don't do it often. But here is what worked for me most of the time:

Have a clean window if possible.
No flash
Shoot at an angle so you don't get any reflections in your shot.

I know there are people who do this all the time, especially in the winter. I am sure they can give you more specific information.
