The punched tape could be fed into a teletype machine to be transmitted either by wire or radio, the receiver could then re-punch another tape and use the new tape to, for instance, control a linotype machine to set the text for a newspaper.
As a radioman in the submarine service way back in the day, we would punch tapes out of the encryption machine and transmit those tapes via teletype.
Otherwise we were pounding out the morse code.
