Finally got around to buying a 22" beauty dish. My good friend Keith was the first victim (he was only over to do some plumbing work for me and he's not exactly a beauty!). I'm really pleased with the result. I've also just bought a third head (Bowens 500R) on ebay for delivery next week. This is getting serious now!

Yeah I have the Teac 3340, I think it still works. Ham Radio,
good for you.. One of my Uncle"s was a big time ham radio guy, he knew several languages so he talked to people all over the world...I used to love to got to his house just to see his rig, it was massive..it was quite a long time ago and all gear was tube. He also was an accomplished musician...

Take care
John

A lot of hams still cherish and regularly use tube gear John, but as with cameras, I now prefer the benefits of using modern equipment :)

Cheers

Very cool, looks like your studio...not sure what deck that is in the first image though it looks to be half inch tape deck. Nice Teac image two, I believe it too is half inch also.. Yeah I had a small recording studio in my garage did small groups mostly demo stuff, but that is as far as I went with it.. I had the Teac quarter inch four Chanel also Akai quarter inch four channel and a Tandberg quarter inch two channel mix down deck, oh yeah mixing board was a Teac six channel. Still have all my gear accept the mikes.....love photography but still involved with music and the High End Audio circles. How about you?

The first pic was at the BBC radio studios in Birmingham in 1974. I was working full time as a photographer but I also did freelance audio engineering work evenings and weekends. You can only see the one in the pic, but to the left of that was the second of a pair of Studer quarter inch decks.

The second pic was around 5 years ago. It's a Teac A3440 quarter inch 4 track that I bought for a project that never happened. I sold it on a couple of years ago to buy more gear for my other hobby, Ham Radio...

Now retired, but still enjoying my photography and also talking to people around the world on the airwaves :-)

Here's a pic of my current radio "shack"

Yes, Davis, CA is a "college town", home to the University of California at Davis. It is the primary agricultural university in California. You probably know that via your brother.

Good to see that there are still people intent on keeping analog alive and kicking!

malco555,

You were a Photography Major or Art Major?

Diploma in Photography, a three year, full time course at technical college. (Art college was a very different world in the 60s!) :-)

Was your college connected with the University of Leeds where the rock band the Who performed in 1970?

They weren't connected academically, but they were only a half mile apart. I wasn't a big Who fan, but I did see Yes perform there in 1970, and I saw ELP at Leeds town hall the same year. I was working for Leeds City Libraries by this time, and I'll never forget Black Sabbath doing an impromptu live performance of Paranoid on the sidewalk outside the main building. The police were not amused...

Once my wife is able to retire and we move to our other home in California, I hope to do photography in some of the places in California where Ansel Adams and Edward Weston took some of there photographs.

I wish you every success! My younger brother lives with his family in Davis. He loves it there

I agree there were cost restrictions, but "not much room for experimentation" and "school" should be mutually exclusive.

This was a three year, full time, college diploma course, covering every technical and scientific aspect of the process. Most all of the experiments that were done in class were done to prove the science. Like I said, pure old school. As students we only got to experiment in a "let's do this totally differently" way (if we had the time or even the equipment) outside of "school" hours. I guess it's very different these days?
