Yes, I'm beginning to get the picture, that it's just incrementing the focus, not actually focusing on anything. Pretty good that it does it like that; what if, after shooting on one branch, it suddenly found empty space to infinity? Thus, I'll have to engage in a lot of experimentation to figure out what works best for me. I guess in the long run it will be easier than just adjusting the focus for myself, which is what I fantasized about when I stepped up to the 850, but there will have to be a fair amount of grunt work between here and there.

I'm also imagining that the size of the step is a complex function of what step size I select, focal length, aperture, and the initial distance at which the lens is focused, making hard to specify how big a step is, unless they published the algorithm somewhere in an interactive context, so one could enter all of the needed values, and then discover the actual size of the step. Maybe some technically savvy person is reading all of this, and there'll be an app soon! (A person can dream, right?)

I only use the online manual from Nikon USA and it has the same page numbers as the printed manual.

Possibly the app you are using is cutting the bottom of the page off, or you downloaded one of the other manuals.

Or, the way the Focus Shift topic is broken up into 3 sections you stopped after section 2 as there is a large blank area at the bottom of the page. It could be mistaken for the end of the topic.
