I hear what a lot of you were saying and simplified the back drop. I used the pop-up flash as master and an external flash.

Here is the result.

Have you tried putting them on a piece of black velvet, which is what most jewellers use to display their lovely jewellery? I did some of my own pieces some time ago on black velvet, with natural light from the window (side lit) and a very fine pin torch to give some highlights, and that worked well. And I also tried just putting them on a light box so that the light shone through the stones, with an overhead light to bring up the texture, and that did quite well. Thoroughly amateur, I know, but decent and interesting results. I can't find where I filed them, so cannot attach, sorry.

On my computer, your images do not look absolutely sharp, but maybe it is my computer, or the magnification level in the post that has blurred the edges a little?

I think he has a very one-sided view. He focusses on wars, blood, selfishness, self-centredness. Not a mention until right at the end about being kinder to one another and preserving what we have. To my mind, it is entirely out of balance. People are, mostly, kind, unselfish, helpful, unselfcentered. He majors on all of the most outrageous acts of evil and cruelty. Those are the things that make the news and which are easy to focus on. For example, everyone has a personal answer to the question: "where were you when JFK was shot?" or "what were you doing on 9/11?" But most of us spend our days doing a million small acts of kindness to our family, friends and neighbours. We major on unheralded unselfish acts which build up to a world where most of us care about other people, look after the elderly, take care of the less advantaged. But these acts are not reported in the press, they are not acclaimed and they are done quietly. I believe they outweigh the dreadful acts of which we as humans are capable - and which make the headlines - but we should not focus on the evil we can do. We should acknowledge the good that most of us do, most of the time.

would love to hear from those only that have been to nyc and what lens you used, or better yet, what one lens do you wish you would have taken. I am headed there for a wedding over Thanksgiving and will have about one full day to myself to walk the streets..... I wont have full kit with me, and will be taking a full frame Canon 5dm3.
Thanks in advance for any/all input.

I was in NYC a year ago exactly with my daughter. We walked the High Line, went up the Empire State Building at sunset, watched the Veterans Parade up 5th Avenue, went to the 9/11 Museum and sailed past the Statue of Liberty on a cruise liner. Canon 24-105 did well for all these places, and I have some great photos. Highly recommend this lens.

You have to buy gifts for two friends. One smokes like a fiend, and the other likes to write with a fountain pen. Fortunately, you have $1,680 to spend, so you can get each friend the perfect gift for $840 each: a cigarette lighter and a pen.

If you have a friend you really don't like very much, you can get him a cheapie key ring for just $175.

Actually, I'd rather have this, please: (and then, pretty please, a camera for it to go on)

"Finally, Leica has also created a limited set of 95 “Edition 0.95” Noctilux lenses with a design that matches the look of the accessories. Each lens is priced at $13,950"

I do 99% of my shopping online. In the time it would take me to drive into town, I can find what I want and buy it. No more going from store to store. There's one thing you should be aware of, though. PayPal.

Lots of sites have PayPal as their preferred method of payment. Usually they have an option to use a credit card instead, but it takes a few clicks and some care to get there. Sometimes, even if you use a credit card, the payment is still made to PayPal.

In September, I paid $30 for a Paint & Sip. It's a franchise where people go to drink while they paint a picture with acrylic paint, following the directions of the instructor. When I got to the session, I discovered that it had been cancelled. I hadn't received a refund after a week, I sent an email requesting one. A few days later, I called my CC company and asked for a reversal of charges.

A week later, I got an email from Paypal saying that they had received a notice of a disputed charge, and they would investigate. It's been a couple of weeks, and still no refund. I'm not concerned about this because I know I'll get my $30 back eventually, but I would never deal with that place again, and I'll avoid payments that involve going through PayPal.

I suspect that was not a problem with PayPal, it seems much more likely it was a problem with Paint & Sip. I also do most of my shopping through the internet and because I think PayPal is safe - and I have never had a problem with them - I use PayPal rather than put my credit card details on line. I once had my card details cloned from an internet transaction when I did not use PayPal, and the crooks took £7,000 from my bank account - which I did not have. So to add insult to injury, my bank added overdraft charges and then interest charges when I said the £7,000 was nothing to do with me and I refused to pay until they investigated it properly. I got the money back eventually, but it took four months. I now use PayPal all the time and have never, ever had a problem.

A couple of possible scenarios and an opinion.

Possible: To answer your question, there was probably someone who bid higher than you within the last few seconds the item was open for bid. That $193 was probably the next highest acceptable amount. The person who outbid you was awarded the item for that amount.

Opinion:
Whenever I've bid on anything on ebay, my first question is how much am I willing to pay for that item? That's what I bid right out of the box, regardless of the amount of time left on the clock. If I win it, great. If not, too bad.

I've seen many items purchased, in the bidding frenzy, for more than the street value of said item.

Additionally, you're up against people who are using software to bid. Yeah, these apps skirt the system as it was planned by ebay. This is why I tend to purchase those items with a fair "Buy it Now" price. Additionally, I won't deal with anyone who requires that I pay through Paypal. Paypal is a less than honourable institution.

Hi Bob, why do you think that PayPal is "a less than honourable institution"? I have never, ever had any problem with payments through PayPal, so am interested to know on what you base your opinion?

I was watching an item on ebay that had a current bid of $160, with 15 seconds left I bid $265. My screen said "current bid $160 you bid $265". A few seconds later it said "ended"and the item went for $193 to somebody else.
What am I missing?

There is always a few seconds lapse between the time you enter your bid and it is recorded. It is possible (although I am only guessing) that you entered your bid, there were only a few seconds left, someone bid that $193.00 just before your higher bid in the last few seconds and your bid just didn't get recorded in time. I have always been lucky, but then I place my bid about 30 seconds before the closing time in order to give time for my bid to be recorded. Sorry that you missed out, hope it wasn't something desperately important to you.

Which of the 2 would you recommend? The best one for different reason?
I am aware that one has interchangeable lens & the other one fix lens.

Thank you.

I went to China with the a6000 and the RX 100 11 (and a Canon 5D Mk 11) I hardly used the Canon, took only a few pictures with the RX100 and took literally 100's of pictures with the a6000 - and was really pleased with the results. I had both the lenses that came with the camera i.e. the "kit" lenses, not the superior ones, and I found that they covered most eventualities. Even inside the Silver Caves (artificial coloured lights only) I have some fab pics taken hand-held with the a6000. You don't need both the Sony cameras, they are very similar, but the a6000 has the advantage of being able to change the lens. Both are very fast in low light. I have since sold the Canon and now own just the a6000, and have no regrets. Make sure that, whichever camera you end up with, you buy extra batteries as they sure use up the power. Even better, buy a plug into which you slot the battery to charge it: you really do not want to tie up your camera whilst charging the battery.

What has any of that got to do with "fashion"? And, in any case, what is "fashion" these days? You certainly cannot wear what they offer!

I heard that "fall" is not used for this time of year in England - "autumn," instead. We use both here.

You are quite right. We would never say "fall" to describe "autumn" here. But we all understand what the "New England Fall" is, and I would love to see it.

The new iOS 9 for iPads and iPhones is not compatible with the a6000 or SD cards having a6000 image files. I attempted to download a6000 images via the Apple Camera Connection Kit under iOS 9 and all image frames showed 4 dash marks. Trying a Canon PS A1400 in the same hookup worked normally. Therefore, the fault lies in the iOS not recognising the Sony formats.

Urge others who use the Apple Camera Connection Kit to try out their cameras SD cards to see how deep the problem is, if you do lPad and have upgraded to iOS 9. There was no problem under iOS 8.4.

This is slightly off-track, but if you use an I-Zettle card reader for your business paired with an I-Phone, do not upgrade to iOS 9. I-Zettle warned me last week that iOS 9 is not compatible with, for example, an iPhone 6 which is what I use.

[quote=sarge69]Today's riddle is for seniors...Here is the situation:

You are on a horse, galloping at a constant speed.

On your right side is a sharp drop-off.

On your left side is an elephant traveling at the same speed as you.

Directly in front of you is a galloping kangaroo and your horse is unable to overtake it.

Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the kangaroo.

What must you do to get out of this highly dangerous situation ?

Think logically before you track down for the answer

I thought very logically. I thought: "All these animals are obviously all travelling at the same speed, so the lion is never going to get me. Where's the danger?"

But I like your answer! :o)
