I ws recently surprised to find that several blank, major brand, DVDs sitting on a bookshelf under a semi-opaque dust cover had yellowed and would not even be recognized by my DVD disk burner or computer, simply due to about one year's worth of incidental sunlight.

For a few years, I had an value added side business of encrypted off-site data backups and the mantra was always backup and backup the backups if they are that important.

The 'up to 200 years' time frame for keeping data on an optical disk was always nonsense, one of those things that gets said and repeated until it sounds like the truth. If it is important enough, back up the core backup, and replace the backup every five years, and check it of course.

Where and how you store it is critical.
From the article: "Keep them in a dry, dark, and cool place since humidity, sunlight, high temperatures, and pollutants can damage the different layers." Consider, if technology changes a lot, switching media. You don't want to be scrambling for a DVD or CD reader in the year 2025. Consider also, keeping your second backup in a different location. If location 1 suffers flood, fire or other disaster, location 2 has a lower chance of the same thing happening to it. This concept helped expand remote/off-site data backups so they can be in dedicated facilities or in "the cloud".

An easy trick is to shoot on Bulb then take a piece of black paper or cloth and cover lens between blasts. The idea is that you can null out the rocket blasts, but still get the explosions in the sky!

That's intriguing. Do you have any examples of that technique?

These two tutorials mention it in different ways.

I certainly don't get it, but I'm sure that you are about to bitch at me about the old school stuff.

So are you saying you believe cameras such as Canon's
5D MK III and 1D X, or Nikon's D 800 do not utilize "advanced electronics", and should be considered "old school stuff" and sentimental technology?!?

No knowledgable, clear thinking individual could possibly make statements like that and hope to be taken seriously.

But to offer an answer to any reasonable portion of your question "Why Do You Drag Around Expensive Photo Gear?"... well a lot depends on what you shoot.

If you mainly shoot kids in the backyard, photos of your pets, vacation snaps, scenics, birthday parties and other similar situations, then a P&S will likely be fine for most of those.

If however you shoot action such as sports or wildlife (as I do) then a P&S is just not going to cut it.

Will your "advanced electronics" little Sony get these shots I've posted here?
Maybe, but probably not.

In any case since you have never posted *any* photos here you have taken recently, we have no way to know if you are any good and know what you are doing, and you are in no position to criticize other photographer's choice in gear.

I bought the KatzEye in order to focus with a 50mm f/1.2 prime lens, but that is not the lens I use most frequently. My walk-around lens is a 18-200mm lens which has its widest aperture f/5.6 at 200mm. At that setting there is no apparent blackout of the prism, and the auto-focus still works for all my lenses with AF.

That's what I wanted to hear! Thanks to everybody who provided comments. I bought an ebay knockoff for my D40 and see how that works. I intend to get a KatzEye for my D90 regardless.

OK, let's try this again. Rockwell says that the most megapixels anyone needs in a camera is from 3-6. He also claims that its the camera companies, FOR THE MOST PART, who create the frenzy about megapixels (the more the merrier, I guess?). So, if I'm just a beginning photography learner (which I am) who wants to buy a decent camera, and if I've narrowed the list of cameras to buy to 2 DSLR's, a Nikon D5100 and the new D3200, forget about cropping, forget about making prints, all I'm doing is taking photos to store on my computer or maybe send to friends. Would I notice any difference in PHOTO QUALITY between these cameras? Before you answer, let's say I use the same 50mm lens on both to take a portrait; the cameras are so close in specs except the two major differences are in megapixels---D5100 has 16, D3200 has 24---and in the RAW---D5100 has 14-bit, D3200 has 12-bit; sensors are the same. So, again, what difference would I see when comparing the photos from each camera? Do more megapixels really make a difference for the kind of photographer I am?

I will make it easy, YOU will not notice the difference in these two cameras, just get the D5100 because it's cheaper :). Get a good quality lens, it's what will make the difference, not these 2 camera specs.

Somehow this stream got into a selling campaign for NIKON and Canon. These two seem to be the only machines available in "camera" stores today---the stores and manufacturers make it almost impossible to form a real choice! The so called sales experts push "Mega Pixels" and how many angels are able to dance on the head of a bottle of Lone Star. Must be a serious pain in the tush to spend all that money and find out there were other cameras, of excellent quality and for less $'s.
When was the talent behind the lens replaced by technoligy, smoke and mirrors? Seems "THEY" are selling to snob appeal rather than desire and talent??????????

You would be hard put to discern between those two cameras using only a monitor image, or e-mailing, or small prints (8x10 or smaller).
To me the choice is simple, and I've already made the choice. The D5100 has the articulated LCD screen, so I can take ground-level shots without dragging my chin in the dirt!

I've just bought a D5100, mainly for the articulated screen. I agree with the comments about pixel count, and although I haven't really tried out the D5100 yet, I've been using a Pentax K-5 with a similar sensor, and I'm very pleased with the results. Currently, in the UK, the D5100 is £70 ($100) cheaper than the D3200 (bodies only).

The attached photo was taken with the K-5.

I disagree completely...no body needs a camera, period. The so-called "need" is actually a desire to cling to occasions that bring pleasurable memories to the front of the mind. That's all commie BS. I have a D90 and tried this and it does not work. I have last up dated the version 1.002 to the camera. When I went on Nikon's site, it shows that the latest version is 1.002. My Nikon Capture NX2 software is where I get the notification does not indicate any more updates. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks!

I got this info via ByThom.com. This update is for Nikon lens distortion control, not the camera "nuts & bolts" functions. The first 2 firmware (A1.00 and B1.00) are the "nuts & bolts" firmware.

Use the links I provided, read up on it and decide for yourself. It worked on my D90 which had the L1.002 **note the "L"** update already installed. This update is L1.006 so it should work fine. Make sure you follow the instructions for your OS and then press Update after you put the SD card back in and go to Firmware Version (under the wrench icon). Also make sure you have a healthy charge on your battery.
