On the D7000, you can get the same info on the rear screen that you get on the little green LCD by hitting the info button on the lower right rear of the camera.
Yes but you still have to use the camera button to get to the things you most might want to change like ISO. On the D5100 you hit that same button twice and it is ready to change anything. It lights up and you use the multi-control to go through everything you might want to change.
On the D7000 you can do that with the things that come up on the bottom of the LCD. But they are things I never change and just, IMHO, add clutter. You need to use the buttons to change things like ISO or EV.
BTW since the little green screen isolates to the thing you have pushed a button for I am getting somewhat able to use it without my reading glasses as my fingers learn where stuff is. I find myself using it more and more for things like ISO, EV, and metering mode adjustments.
I suppose its because I had a year of experience with the D5100 before I got the D7000 that I prefer its system. There are several things about the D7000 I really do like such as the significantly better viewfinder and the front wheel to change ISO when in P mode.
I'm not sure yet if I like the release mode wheel. I find it a bit awkward and sometimes find I left it in a position I don't want; e.g. remote release. When I press and nothing happens that's usually why. The D5100 release mode is controlled on the LCD and reverts to single shot when you turn the camera off. I thought I didn't like that till I got the alternative on the D7000.
But I remain a firm advocate of the articulated screen as the D5100/5200's best feature. That wouldn't matter to someone who only did portraits or something like that. But I used it frequently and now severely miss the ability to hold the camera in differeing positions without contorting my body to positions it no longer will go to.
I'll keep the D7000 for a year or so and then see what's available. As I noted above if I were in a position to switch it now I'd go for the D5200.
