I just purchased a Macbook Pro....... I too have an empty bank account. I don't even need to worry about monitor calibration cause I can't even use this d&^% thing! I am going to have to go to Mac school or something. I got it specifically for photo editing and tried to download the trial version of Elements 10 to no avail. I thought Macs were supposed to be easier. yeesh.

I just got converted too. There is a learning curve with a MAC. I suggest starting with iPhoto to get used to it and when you're ready step up to Aperture.

I, too, converted to mac 3 years ago. There are tons of tutorials on how to use everything. If you are near a big city with an Apple store you can get various kinds of education. There are people online who will answer questions for a small fee. There are mac user forums online like this that can help. I agree that you should start in iPhoto. It is very user friendly. I made a yearbook for my elementary school last year. I also went to aperature two years ago. I use both and am still learning, but would never go back to a buggy pc.

Why are a lot of lenses like the 18-105mm, and the 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR more expensive than the kit lenses?

I know the focal range is a bit bigger than the 18-55, but it's not bigger than the 55-200 and it is more expensive than that lens too. The maximum aperture isn't any better.

Are they just sharper??

Thanks for asking this question. I've always been baffled as to why this lens is $200 and that one is $2000.

they have Vibration reduction

So do the kit lenses.

mine didn't so there

Sounds like someone is jealous!

I have a D-5000 and have always wondered the same thing about the kit lenses versus the others. I thought both of my kit lenses were VR, but the 18-55 is, and the 55-200 isn't! What gives Nikon?

OMG! You know when people write: "LOL" you wonder if they really do. Well, after I saw this post, I actually did. I'm sure my co-workers are wondering what's up with him. :-D Cheers.

Not sure what "LOL" means but I do know what a 27 Ford flathead is. Do you have any Photo's?

LOL is the texting generations shorthand for Laugh Out Loud.

We saw, and got a huge track in the snow, a huge coyote in town in Southern Indiana. I read where a coyote and wolf will interbreed occasionaly, but the coyote and domestic dog are even more likely to interbreed. These coydogs keep their preditory nature and are not as people shy as a pure coyote.

ok not a big deal Just got the final call last night Newsday which is a big New York newspaper is publishing one of my shots in their 2012 Funbook . Its just a shot of a friend and my daughter and one of her friends on a jet ski. Not artistic or anything but they loved it for some reason. Comes out in May.....

If they loved it then it has merit. You should be proud. Way to go!

I had the two lenses you just mentioned on my D3100. I just bought the 35mm f/1.8 dx lens, (200$) and have not looked back. I haven't put my 18-55 back on since getting the new one, and I may even sell it.

I promise you will not be disappointed. I can e-mail you a few examples of what I took if you'd like..

I took your advice after reading lots of reviews on both lenses. I got the 35mm f1.8 DX. B & H had it for about $197 with free shipping and no tax. Thanks. I know I will love it.

I have been wanting another lens besides the two kit lens that came with my Nikon D-5000. A 55-200 and an 18-55. And my wife thinks the pics I take are just fine. But I'm wanting another lens.
What is the difference between a Nikon 50mm f1.2 AF Nikkor lens and a Nikon 50mm f1.2 AF-S Nikkor lens. I saw some stunning photos by a Timothy Bayaka using the fixed lens. Is this considered a wide angle? And is it good for landscape photos. I've already heard some of you say refurbished is a good deal. My DW won't let me spend too much until she sees a stunning difference.

Actually, it was dusk and I was limping along (Later got a partial knee replacement) trying to keep up with my wife and kids as we descended those long stairs in front of the Arch. I turned around and quickly took the shot.

I love your Arch shots. Did not know about Marine week. I was in 1960 to 1963. I was sea-going. Two years aboard the Coral Sea CVA 43.

No. I'm not from McHenry County. My last name is McHenry. I was raised in Moline, IL--and spent most summers on a farm in North Missouri. I left Moline High in 1960 to "see the world."

Like you, I love to take pictures. I'm pretty new at it and hope to learn from your collective experience. I've already learned a little just looking around this great website.
