Shot this lovely Heron on the Hudson Estuary. High tide was flooding in, and he had all the food he could handle.

I saw these on the way home from work today... My dogs are bigger than them...
The sun was a bit high in the sky, so the light was a touch harsh, but they were so interesting in their shaggyness, and more than willing models... I couldn't help shooting them!

Interesting water droplet pattern on the uprising wall of water... the water wall rising up segregates the inner turbulence, from the tranquil river

Using a prime lens offers some challange to proper distance for proper focus. I think all the pictures are good with the exception of the focus on the second one.

These are not separate pictures.. There is the main shot, then just exploded views of pieces of that shot. So of course with the short depth of field only on point (mm's) are tack sharp. I just added these as a case study

Got my hands on this really sharp older Minolta 50mm prime AF lens. It seems to work just fine on my Sony A77.
Nice and sharp, and short depth of field for under $100... Any/all thoughts appreciated.

BTW... The RAW picture, or even a larger jpg than what you can see here, looks so much better as you can see (almost feel) all the different textures. Obviously it would have been better for me if the owner didn't have this house so hidden, but.. you play the had your dealt

I think the photo has a lot of interest. To me the piece of farm equip in forground is distracting....On my laptop I actually have to scroll up and down to see the full picture and if I cut off the bottom just below the very top of the cattails the composition changes and to my eye it gets better....try it and see what you think.

I guess so... I find the piece of farm equipment and the very edge of the field with it's golden charm, well... charming and of added interest.

Lovely little bird with a fearless disposition. When I came out to shoot the flurry of birds that were around the feeder, they all took off except for this little fella.. He posed for me, ate, frolicked about.
Shot with the Sony A77 w/ Sony 70-400mm G Lens @ 400mm, ISO 640, f/5.6, S 1/800 sec ... shot from about 20 yards away.

I said that I wasn't going to post any more pictures of cardinals or finches for a while. Well, we got our first real snowfall overnight(about an inch and a half). I was checking my e-mail when I caught these. I learned to always keep my camera nearby and at the ready.

Unfortunately I had my 300mm lens attached and in this poor light I got a little fringing. I guess I should have stopped down a bit, huh? I wanted to grab as much light as I could.

Keep in mind that I am shooting through a patio door.

Hey... so the top two shots are Male and Female Cardinal, correct?
The third shot.. is that some sort of Chickadee arguing with a Cardinal?
Nice shots

A small non-photographic detail: while local names for plants can vary considerably, and I can't say what is called ragweed in that neck of the woods, references indicate that ragweed is a broadleaf plant, and those seed pods look more consistant with some grass. Ragweed seed pods appear more like numerous little separated clusters. They remind me of how the seedpods of dock look. But dock is related to buckwheat.

I agree, Bobber-- this looks like a grass. Which one I really can't say, but it is very attractive (much more so than ragweed seed heads).

I always called this stuff ragweed. We're plagued with it in the northeast. When you travel down the NJ Turnpike past the Meadowlands, you see 1000's of acres of this stuff. I always thought it was ragweed... perhaps "marshweed"?
Thanks,

I know I'm reaching a bit.. but at least I'm out here trying to compose! I found the textures of the old farmhouse, the Evergreen, the naked trees and the farm plow interesting and mood provoking, even if subtly.

not sure what the subject is.....house.....plow......setting. If the latter the only thing that would make much difference would be the light. If either of the other two you have to decide if the subject is worth buck shot in the arse.

Any larger and I wouldn't have caught engough sky, or the plow would be gone. It was the best I could get, while still capturing all that interested me... the sky, the house, textures of the trees, and the field and plow.... I'm sure if the house wasn't hiding, it would be plenty prominent as the subject... But I just played the hand that was dealt. I'll tell you.. it's nowhere near as easy composing in the Winter.. as it is in the summer.
Well.. the subject is the house, sitting so obviously (too much?) on the 3rds.... And I'm not sure any photo is worth getting into a gunfight for.

thanks for that - then i think regardless of where you place the house
(rule of thirds) it won't matter because the house is too small in the frame to command one's attention.........you are simply too far away...i think
