If it is a signed and numbered print, I sign with initials, date, and number on the lower edge of the print that will be covered by the matte or somewhere on the back if it is a wrapped canvas. If not numbered I will sign the matte in pencil. If requested I will sign the print in ink at the buyers direction.

Tripod release plates remind me of watch batteries and printer ink cartridges. Why so many different styles? We've had some cheapo, light tripods over the years, and each one had a different release plate.

My son got a Vanguard Tracker 4 a few years ago and bought extra plates for it, knowing he would not be able to walk into a store and buy one.

I recently got one of these myself - nice tripod and not too expensive. I got the new GH-100 pistol grip ball head for it, and that takes a different plate - almost twice the price of the regular plate. There is absolutely no reason for a different release plate on the ball head. From a manufacturing standoint, it would be cheaper to make one plate for all products, and it would make life easier for customers.

If I am in the market for a new tripod, I would like to be able to use the mounting plates I already have. If I know that even if I buy another Vanguard, I will need a different plate, that could steer me toward a different brand.

I have converted all my equipment 3 cameras, 3 telephoto lenses with ring mounts, a spotting scope ,and 5 Tripods to Arca Swiss type plates so everything is easily interchangeable. If you shop E-bay dilligently you can find them very cheap to very pricey I opted for some cheap one for the less important things and moderate priced ones for the more critical items. I think it is worth the money just to get rid of the frustration of never having the right plate on the combination I was going to use.

Sorry this is a reply to Nikon 13's post. I am new but old and trying to figure out this site. I guess I should have used the quote button.
You have a computer so you have editing software. At the very least you can download Picasa or Gimp which are free.
I would try Picasa from Google and make your mother happy. LOL

This is a fun thing to do as a project but as one can see from the earlier entries it is hard to determine or actually to take a photo with no post processing. At what point do you move from the purist to enhancing the photo in todays digital cameras. If the object is to force one to return to the days of composing your image before the shot was taken etc. You need to shoot in raw and manual mode with no light metering or auto focus. This would not produce very good images because the sensor does not capture light and colors the same way an aray of different films did. So if a consensus can be reached on just what is allowed I would be happy to jump in. I shoot only raw because it gives me an archive copy of exactly what the sensor picked up and allows me to later, as software gets better go back and work a previous image without and degredation from compression. All that being said don't take it as a knock on the idea I just wanted some guidence.

I did a quick scan and didn't see that any one had mentioned this yet so I thought I would add my 2 cents.
I too missed my split screen focusing from my old SLR days and saw an article in PBASE, where I am a member on the subject. I have a Canon 7D and replaced the focusing screen with one from [katzeyeoptics.com] they have an excellent primer on focusing screens and offer a few choices. They also have instructions for replacing them yourself or they will do it in conjunction with the purchase for an additional fee. I chose to replace it myself and am extreamly happy with it. Also it has no effect on auto focus as the screen is not part of the auto focus system just the viewfinder. Dave.
