There's just one thing that annoys me about digital cameras, planned obsolescence or technology. whichever you choose.
I have an 8 year old Olympus C-720 3mp camera that was good in its day but now woefully obsolete. SmartMedia cards have been outdated and hard to find and the camera itself isn't worth anything now.
Yes I love the great pictures they take and the versatility of card memory, but technology guarantees that $1000 you spend on todays cameras will render them worthless in just a few short years. And you need a pocket full of batteries to keep them alive. Maybe 35mm cameras have advantages after all, most of them never wear out and will give you pictures as long as you can get film and processing for them. Goodbye Kodachrome, the choice of National Geographic for years.
