Scotty, after one gets past your pontificating mumbo jumbo, the situation is actually very simple. To wit, I'll place a result, which for me is typical, rather than go on arguing about various numbers seemingly pulled out of thin air with an occasional reference to RawDigger.

In this case, I spot metered the brightest portion of the clouds, somewhat in the center of the image. Knowing that that meter reading would indicate an exposure that would place that portion of the scene in Zone V, I increased (ETTR) the exposure 2-1/2 stops to place that portion of the scene just below Zone VIII. I made the exposure.

In processing that exposure, I normalized the histogram, in ACR. Then increased the brightness setting to bring the brightest portion of the clouds to the brightness I desired. Then reduced the blacks to the level I desired for them. Additionally, some burning and dodging in PS to accomplish my vision of the scene and that's it. The side effect of the need to reduce the blacks in the image is the reduction of visible noise.

Now, understand that this exposure adjustment wasn't just pulled out of a hat. I did extensive testing of my camera's capabilities using a Macbeth Color chart and numerous exposures with various lenses, various meters and metering modes, and at various ISO settings to determine where the situation would go completely south and produce an image that was completely unmanageable in ACR. Those tests included, but were not limited to, analysis using RawDigger and the aforementioned ACR.

Oh, and no I didn't chimp. I rarely do. The reason being is the processed jpg histogram on the back of the camera would simply be large areas of blinkies.

Yes, it’s even easier than with film once RawDigger shows you where the brightest zone is in relation to the middle gray that the meter is reporting.

For all three of my cameras, middle gray is between 14-bit raw values 1000 and 2000. That places the brightest JPEG zone between 4000 and 8000 - two steps brighter. The next higher zone is between 8000 and 16000 and all three of my cameras flash their blinkies for that level.

But the histograms and the spot meter are virtually useless in setting the exposure to the right. The histogram on the camera covers the entire image and the spot is never small enough.

RawDigger also shows me that the green channel is usually blown first. If your highlights have a magenta cast it may be because green is blown out.

The blinkies are more reliable because they tell you where the scene is beyond the 8000 level.

All of the mumbo jumbo about ERADR and precision measurements is total nonsense. Knowing that exposure zone VIII is the last zone available to raw is all you need to know.

Gene, same here. Well, that goes without saying since I shoot RAW 100% of the time. I did, however, try it back in 2010 when I first got my D700. Hmmm, what's this? sort of thing. RAW seems to have solved that part of the equation. More sophisticated techniques, definitely improved everything.

My own testing showed the resulting files were more susceptible to blowing highlights, seemingly because of less headroom - for my shooting, I'm just fine with not bothering with ADL. I leave it off.

I've used RawDigger for some number of years and thoroughly understand what the program does and the presentation of the data it produces.

ETTR/EBTR is not complicated at all. In fact, it's quite a simple technique to use. It's no more complicated than placing the dark parts of a scene in their appropriate Zone when doing black and white film photography.

Once you understand what RawDigger can tell you about the relationship between exposure and what gets recorded in the raw file, you might find that ETTR/EBTR as it has been described by others on UHH may be simply more complicated than necessary.

Look at the raw histograms posted above. There was nothing on the camera's histograms that would have told me how really close I was to blowing the highlights, especially in the Sony example. The only useful indication I got in the camera was the flashing blinkies. What they told me was that a significant portion of the image may have been recorded in the 8000-16000 14-bit raw range (exposure zone VIII). The JPEGs did not recover that but developing from the raw file would have worked fine.

The only problem with the blinkies is that they don't tell you if you have gone over the 16000 limit, just that you have gone over the 8000 JPEG limit. Watching the blinkies is getting me close enough to ETTR/EBTR that I don't need to get involved in all of the other complications.

No. The image is not affected. My concern is the ACR edits and where they are stored. If you can store them as a sidecar file, that is definitely an advantage. I've tested images from RAW compared to DNG conversion. I saw no difference on the file level. What I didn't test was if the data from the ACR edits was saved within the DNG or as a sidecar file.

I have a Nikon D500. To process my NEF images in Photoshop, I've been using the Adobe converter software for years. My question has to do with the option of just converting to simple DNG, or to opt for the embedding of the original NEF file in the DNG in case I want to revert to the original raw file. When processing hundreds of images, the consideration is of importance, since the simple conversion takes about 1 second per image, but the full conversion (NEF+DNG) takes around 7 seconds per image.

Does the quality of the DNG image suffer if I choose the DNG-only option? Thank you in advance for your advice and suggestions.

A councilman in Washington, D.C., said on Facebook that rich Jews who control the weather caused an unexpected snowstorm.

Trayon White Sr., a Democrat representing the district’s 8th Ward, posted a video early Friday morning in which he accused “the Rothschilds” of controlling the climate to make money — an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory. He later removed the video.

The Rothschilds are a well-known wealthy European Jewish dynasty descended from a Jewish banker originally from Germany. Anti-Semitic conspiracy theories over many decades have charged that the Rothschild family and other wealthy Jews have interceded in world events for their financial gain.

In the video, White said: “Man, it just started snowing out of nowhere this morning, man. Y’all better pay attention to this climate control, man, this climate manipulation. And D.C. keep talking about, ‘We a resilient city.’ And that’s a model based off the Rothschilds controlling the climate to create natural disasters they can pay for to own the cities, man. Be careful.”

The Washington Post first reported the story.

Internet conspiracy theorists have stated the belief that the Rockefeller Foundation’s Resilient Cities initiative, which provides grants to cities, including Washington, to address environmental and economic problems, is part of a plot to control and reduce the population of North America. And some conspiracy theorists also think the Rothschilds, working together with the Rockefellers, have technology to control the weather.

White told The Washington Post, which called him for comment, that the video “says what it says” and expressed surprise that his remarks were considered anti-Semitic. He sent an apology to the newspaper for the post four hours after it appeared online via text message.

“I work hard every day to combat r****m and prejudices of all kinds. I want to apologize to the Jewish Community and anyone I have offended,” he said in the text. “The Jewish community have been allies with me in my journey to help people. I did not intend to be anti-Semitic, and I see I should not have said that after learning from my colleagues.”

White said that the Jews United for Justice, a group that advocates for progressive causes and which endorsed him in 2016, was “helping me to understand the history of comments made against Jews and I am committed to figuring out ways continue to be allies with them and others.”

A City Council colleague, Brianne Nadeau, a Democrat who is Jewish and represents the district’s diverse 1st Ward, said in a Facebook post that White had reached out to her to apologize and “expressed his sincere regret, I believe, for having offended members of the Jewish community.”

“I believe he is being t***hful when he says he didn’t realize what his statement implied,” Nadeau added.

She noted that elected officials need to focus on eradicating all h**e and bigotry and “focus on lifting each other up rather than tearing one another down.”

“I understand how important it is to build bridges between our marginalized communities. My experiences of persecution as a Jew, and the experiences of my ancestors, are at the core of what drives me to serve the community,” Nadeau said. “My Jewish values tell me to help those less fortunate than I am, to work to repair the world and to do something when I see injustice. My Jewish values also teach me forgiveness.”

I've owned and used an F5 for about 4 years now. I think it's a great camera. I've used the lenses I purchased with my D700 and D800e, as well as lenses I used on my F. It works great. Although I purchased two additional battery modules, I've rarely used them as the batteries seem to last quite a while. I just alternate them from time to time. Except for it using film, it works very similarly to my digitals as far as metering modes, etc.

I have the opportunity to purchase either an F4S or an F5 in "excellent" condition from a reputable dealer for roughly the same price. I have owned several F4S's and love them, especially the ability to use the older lenses with ears (although I have had only AI and AIS lenses for years). I also like that all the controls are manual. The F5 is electronic, has the extended trip and advanced metering, but will it handle AI lenses and what restrictions would that entail? FPS is not an issue, nor is weight. Interchangeable screens is; I like an E (grid) screen and would like to be able to find a BriteScreen. Of course, these will have to be added, as the cameras will probably come with B screens. I also have a concern about battery life. Any comments from members who have used either or (ideally) both cameras would be most welcome. Thank you, but I am not interested in the F6 at this time (outrageous prices), nor am I interested in other cameras or formats; no replies about Canon, Pentax, 4/3, mirrorless, digital, etc., please. Thank you for your assistance.

The problem is that the entire Mueller thing is questionable. Special counsels are not set up to investigate if there was a crime. They are convened when there is proof that there was illegality and to investigate that. What we are seeing here is a which hunt. Which one can we pin something on. The entire thing was convened using documents that were shown to be questionable. I'm not sure why this investigation is still being permitted.
