The image appears to be somewhat back-focused but even the background is soft. Was the frame filled or is this a seriously cropped picture perhaps? Is this a recurring problem with this lens, or a one-off?

Y'all might remember that I went through nearly a year of trying to get my 1 DX fixed. Never did. A few days ago Canon had a tent at the Phoenix Zoo and were showing off some new product. So I wondered by. I mentioned my difficulty with the 1Dx, which by chance I had been shooting that day. One of the fellows asked to look at it. He inquired if it had failed that day, and frankly I hadn't looked (as I've sort of learned to not bother). He looked back through my pictures and claimed they were all "perfect." Another fellow also looked and claimed them to all be "perfect."

These are two images they called "perfect." Notice they were both shot at exactly the same settings, but look at the difference. (These are undeveloped RAW converted to jpeg in LR.) I guess if that's what they call perfect, then my camera has no problems (which is what they claim!). There were about 6 more just like these that would have been some of the first they looked at.

Throughout this thread no one has mentioned ISO. My R5 cameras have the tendency to switch to auto ISO without my input. Very annoying! I’m sure you would have noticed, but could that be your problem?

Try deleting all files from the print cue. Send another print, if that doesn’t work delete the file you just sent and reinstall the driver. If that doesn’t work check for Win 11 updates.

I haven’t used LR for sky replacement but Photoshop works really well for my real estate uses. Select Edit/Sky Replacement. They have numerous built in sample sky's. Super simple.

When I was coming up as a wedding photographer I would bring a “cheat sheet’’ with a few poses to look at shortly before starting a series. With your experience as a landscape and street photographer, technical proficiency is probably less important than posing. Gather some images from Instagram or Facebook and bring them along. It may help you be more fluent as you setup shots.

I use the crop mode on the R5 routinely for sports. It turns my 70-200 into a 112-320. I don’t have the time to crop in post, and since I do a lot of night shoots, I need the 2.8 aperture, so converters are less than optimal for me. 17MP is more than enough for news print and enlargements to 11x14 or more. It’s a great feature, one that I treasure.

I would routinely use a tripod for all portraits and groups in wedding photography with my Hasselblad system. It was always slow and cumbersome, but necessary while using 100-400 speed film since I usually dragged the shutter to pick up ambient light. When digital came around dragging the shutter introduced color temperature issues that film was more forgiving with. But I still used one outside of the studio since low ISO’s were needed most of the time. Today I use a tripod for real estate mostly since I need precise leveling of the camera, and for multiple exposures and masking. But for everything else I totally agree. The need for a tripod has diminished for my line of work.

Hopefully you can grab chairs and shoot 3-4 rows. Sitting on floor, chairs, with a row standing behind chairs. A small aperture is not necessary as long as folks are tightly arranged near to far. Use your wide zoom at 4.5-5.6. Your distance will provide “natural” depth of field but focus carefully on the front or second row.

When you remove the primary CF Express card, the camera will change the playback-select card to the secondary SD card. You will need to manually reset the playback slot back to the CF Card. As others have said this is most likely your problem. You are looking at the images from the SD after formatting the CF. If in doubt reformat both cards as others have suggested.

Bill,
I admire your work greatly and I’m in awe of your creativity and technical excellence. I’m curious though about how you frequently get black backgrounds in photographs taken in daylight. Are you simply burning or masking black around subjects? Or are you just capturing shafts of light in twilight situations. Or all the above? Please share your techniques.
