I'm traveling in Europe with a Coolpix P900 (somewhat sophisticated point and shoot) and the 24-2000mm lens is fantastic. Will never travel with the D300 and assorted lens again. So, DSLR is great when near home or traveling by car but for serious travel, my P900 is more than satisfactory despite no RAW.
Other side of nave - not as striking but...
Nikon P900 hand-held, slightly cropped, no other processing; copied to iPad and posted.
I have used Shutterfly many times with pleasing results. Skip all their formatting and do your own composing, etc. Print quality is excellent.
PS They are always running some kind of price promotion.
I second the Pink Jeep recommendation but I would avoid the Humvee tours since they are too large for access to some areas. Also, there are helicopter tours - at Sedona, gets you great views of some Pueblo dwellings and at the GC, awesome views East of the main tourist area.
P900 shot from our balcony, handheld, no post-processing; first at 24mm, second at 2000mm; geese at center left of first pix.
This one was under our garbage can in southern Arizona one Monday morning. I think the bulge may be a recently departed baby rabbit.
Shots from our balcony (no post-processing). First at 24mm, F2.8, 1/2000 and second at 2000mm, F6.5, 1/500 set on Auto, hand-held. The geese are left-center in first photo. Plan to carry just this camera on an upcoming international trip.
