Hi Awesome Hogs,

I recently volunteered to shoot a 25th anniversary party as a favor, friend, and attendee. No big formal gig. A pig roast. I shot my Nikon 750 and holy trinity set of lenses. The photos look great in camera and on my MacBook Pro. Sharp on zoom. I've uploaded the gallery to both AdoramaPix and Costco photo center to create a book, only to yield results that look nothing like I see on screen. Adorama says my resolution isn't adequate and Costco just looks awful. Some, but not all, are cropped. I shot in RAW and am exporting from Lightroom in Jpeg. Please help! I did this as a gift and I'm wondering if I can deliver! Many thanks for any advice you can offer!

You may have sent 72dpi images meant for monitor viewing and posting to websites INSTEAD of sending jpegs at a dpi of 240-300 needed for print production?

Hi Awesome Hogs, br br I recently volunteered to ... (show quote)

I have used Blurb for my photobooks. The main reason being that I like to do "my own thing" - and Blurb allows full-bleed pages to be put into their books.
I start (in Photoshop Elements) with a blank document of the exact dimensions needed to produce a full bleed page, at a resolution of 300ppi. I put my photos on that document, put a background on, type any text I want to include, etc. I work all this in layers, so that it is easy to change my mind about one little detail (or about the whole thing). When I'm happy with the result, I save the work as a .psd file, then merge the layers and save as .jpg file. It's the jpg file I then put on the page of the book.

The dimensions and resolution can be found somewhere on the Blurb website - unfortunately I no longer have them - lost them when my computer crashed a little while ago. It was one of the very few files that was not backed up....

I have used Shutterfly many times with pleasing results. Skip all their formatting and do your own composing, etc. Print quality is excellent.
PS They are always running some kind of price promotion.

I have used Costco for photo books and other prints. Costco uses Dry Creek profiles. Your monitor and their's appear very different. They will gladly redo a photo book if you are not satisfied(free!). Here is the link to Dry Creek:http://www.drycreekphoto.com/icc/

Check your export menus and see if you had the file type and size set too small. You can also check the size of one of the photo files. I do apple books and upload large tiff files. But I think for a med size book you can use 15mb jpg. Really has to do with pixel count versus image size in the book.

I use Adoramapix and Costco extensively. Seldom had any image quality problems, and when I did, they quickly made new prints at no charge. Cropping is always controlled by me, which they allow, as long as I resize certain images before hand to fit a paticular hard copy format. If Adorama says your resolution is "inadequate", they're implying it's too low, even though it may not seem like it from you're post. Request a (free) reprint. Check your ppi and jpg compression settings. Make sure ppi is at or around 300, and jpg compression is set to highest (or high). Talk to their service reps again. Both companies have stellar customer service and usually accommodate free reprints. (Still, They may balk at reprinting for free if your jpgs were way too low in ppi and compression).
