I am spending Christmas in Panama with my wife's family and doing a lot of tourist stuff. First time there for me. My question is whether it is foolish to carry around my dslr and be identified immediately as a tourist. I understand staying out of certain parts of Panama City, and my wife has a good feel for that. Has anyone been there in recent years with full gear?

I understand growing tired of repetitive subjects. I sometimes think I will scream if I see another snapshot of someone's cat. (Of course, my theory there is that self-indulgent cats trained them to take repetitive photos.) Although I would prefer to see mostly exceptional photographs, without seeing the humdrum snapshots we would never appreciate the great. Besides, there is a wide variety of talent here. Exposure to great photography will inspire some few to move beyond point-and-shoot, fully programmed travel pics. After all, the ultimate purpose of this forum is to give everyone a severe case of GAS, right?

CSM? I checked on Wikipedia. These were some of my favorite possibilities:

It was a warm night (about 60F), which was nearly a record for the date, the makings of a nice sunset, and there was no wind. So we decided to go see the lights on Temple Square in Salt Lake City. The final shot deserves a little explanation. I was shooting three bracketed photos. I was using a tripod, BBF and a remote for the shutter release, however I had inadvertently left Live View on after setting everything up. On the middle (normal exposure) shot, the autofocus in LV wigged out and it was obvious it had focused on something other than what I had chosen. I kept it and later ran it and the other two frames through Photomatix. It turned out to be a serendipitous moment. Perhaps Monet would be pleased.
One funny story. A guy stopped to talk while I was shooting a little later. The place was filled with people, maybe 2k-3k. People wandering in front of my camera. The guy said something about all the people ruining the photo, but I assured him I had a people filter on the lens. When he saw the shot, he was a believer and wanted to know where to get one of those filters. The magic of long exposures!

I have been using a Black Rapid sling for a couple of years. I love it for several reasons. First, it screws into the 1/4" tripod mount on the base of the camera and is very secure. Second, it is adjustable so my camera is always on or near my right hip and within inches of my right hand. Third, it is comfortable.

Focus stacking is a great tool and supported by PS. You can even google it and find instructions.

We have a golf course behind our house and it is frequented by 20-30 mule deer (also a rafter of wild turkeys...I had to look that up to know the correct word). The deer love our apples, so we often take a few that have fallen and toss them over the fence. Yesterday there were four (including two very young ones) that were coming right up to the fence with me just a few feet away and staring me down in an obvious effort to let me know they wanted more. The photos had to be shot through the fence, but still fun. I also managed a few photos of some of the last apples and leaves left on the tree. It was windy, so focus was a challenge.

I have been using the 18-140 as my carry-around lens on my D7200 for several years (good lens) and also picked up an older Nikon 105 micro (love it!) for true macro stuff. Yesterday I purchased a used Tamron 16-300 from B&H to get that longer reach (arriving Friday). I may end up selling the 18-140.
