Lots of great photos that any owner would be happy to have. Love the color, positioning, background and all the details of "your dogs". The ones most endearing (for me) are those with direct eye contact. How do you get them to look at you?

We are hiking in the Tucson area on sometimes rocky and narrow trails and prefer having both hands free for balance. While I usually take my Nikon 7100 and a fairly light weight 70-200 with a shoulder strap, I do have the Nikon 610 and my new Nikon 200-500, which together weigh almost as much as I do. Does anyone have a suggestion about how I can carry the 200-500 hands free and yet have easy access when I need a quick shot? I was considering a big sling bag but have never had one. An ideas will be appreciated.

A different perpective-
If it were me (and I do hike in the Az desert) I would go as light as possible with a mirrorless camera and 16-xxx lens and 2 walking poles to keep my balance on those narrow, rocky, sometimes steep trails (and my hands off the rocks to avoid accidental contact with crawling creatures) LOL. Consider it a survey hike and if you find something worthy that requires your BIG gear you can always go back.

When set at other than flash sync it does switch to manual with that older lens. but you still have that lovely little meter just like the old FM so you just twirl the ISO dial to expose - just there under your left finger. Or get the lens with the auto aperture switch.

Thanks for your comments although issue was resolved a couple of responses ago via Harry B. He gave an explanation of how to get the camera to pop into shutter priority mode with a lens without an aperture ring. So now I know.

My xt-2 does not do that with my 50 - 230. Here is a photo taken with flash in shutter priority (250) with an xt-2, The screen info said it was S and exposed the photo normally.

Is your lens the OIS II version or the older one? Mine is the newer one.

Then, why not just shoot in manual?

That's what I have been doing- but for birds I missed the convenience of shutter priority in changing light conditions.

Alright Harry B- that's got it. Too tricky! Did I miss this in the manual?
Thanks so much

Why don't you ask on one of the Fuji specific forums?

I did look on the forum for similar issue but didn't see it. So now it's time to register on the forum and ask that question.

I looked at the other Fuji lenses on B&H Photo and they have the A marking on the lens with IRIS symbol. This zoom does not. I can set the speed (and aperture) in Manual mode- guess that will have to do for now.

It's the 50-230 mm f 4.5-6.7 OIS II The aperture can be set by putting the top dial on A and then turning the command dial.
If you set the speed instead, the camera flips to Manual.

How nice of you to download the manual :) I read the same thing you did in the Fuji Forum and I thought Bingo that's it. But the lens in questions has a zoom and a focus ring only with zoom markings from 50-230 and no switch on the side that is labeled A nor an IRIS image. This is a relatively new lens and a new updated version- I'm starting to think that maybe it can't be used in shutter priority. I queried Google multiple times with different wording but never got a satisfactory answer. It's the only zoom that I have so can't visually compare it to others. Thank you for your time.

Thanks for replying- no I didn't find that to work. It doesn't switch the camera mode to shutter priority (still in manual mode) and you can only set shutter speeds 1/30 or slower. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I know this is a simplistic inquiry but I have not been able to figure it out. Sure I will feel simple when someone supplies the answer but here goes :)

In following the manual- and various Internet sites: (Re Setting the Camera in Shutter Priority Mode)

I have been unable to set shutter priority mode with a zoom lens that does not have aperture settings (A) on the lens. When I dial in the speed the camera bypasses shutter priority mode and goes straight to manual mode. I am specifically referencing the 50-230 mm lens.

With a lens that has aperture settings on the lens putting aperture in A (on the lens) allows me to then dial in shutter speed via button on the camera and remain in shutter priority mode- referencing the 23 mm f2 lens

The manual only illustrates lenses with the aperture markings- not all Fuji lenses have that.

Hope that is clear- Thanks for your help.

Well done! Love the classic pose you captured. I have never seen this kind of seagull before. Unique to me and very pretty!
