Calling all Fuji X-T2 users- question about Shutter Priority Mode

I know this is a simplistic inquiry but I have not been able to figure it out. Sure I will feel simple when someone supplies the answer but here goes :)

In following the manual- and various Internet sites: (Re Setting the Camera in Shutter Priority Mode)

I have been unable to set shutter priority mode with a zoom lens that does not have aperture settings (A) on the lens. When I dial in the speed the camera bypasses shutter priority mode and goes straight to manual mode. I am specifically referencing the 50-230 mm lens.

With a lens that has aperture settings on the lens putting aperture in A (on the lens) allows me to then dial in shutter speed via button on the camera and remain in shutter priority mode- referencing the 23 mm f2 lens

The manual only illustrates lenses with the aperture markings- not all Fuji lenses have that.

Hope that is clear- Thanks for your help.

I do not have this camera so you may choose to ignore this response.

Can you use the T setting (Time) (I know this is really for long exposures), but would it not work as a normal shutter priority mode?

Thanks for replying- no I didn't find that to work. It doesn't switch the camera mode to shutter priority (still in manual mode) and you can only set shutter speeds 1/30 or slower. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I don't have the camera but I just downloaded the manual and this is my guess as I don't have the camera. On the lenses that don't have the aperture marking it still have a ring that you can adjust the aperture. It also has a switch on the side that labeled A and the image of the IRIS. When you put the switch on A then the aperture is automatic. When you put it on the IRIS symbol you can change the aperture manually by turning the ring and watch the aperture setting in the viewfinder.
Let me know if I am wrong.

How nice of you to download the manual :) I read the same thing you did in the Fuji Forum and I thought Bingo that's it. But the lens in questions has a zoom and a focus ring only with zoom markings from 50-230 and no switch on the side that is labeled A nor an IRIS image. This is a relatively new lens and a new updated version- I'm starting to think that maybe it can't be used in shutter priority. I queried Google multiple times with different wording but never got a satisfactory answer. It's the only zoom that I have so can't visually compare it to others. Thank you for your time.

So may be you can tell us which lens it is? I wonder how do you set the aperture on that lens when in manual mode?

It's the 50-230 mm f 4.5-6.7 OIS II The aperture can be set by putting the top dial on A and then turning the command dial.
If you set the speed instead, the camera flips to Manual.

I looked at the other Fuji lenses on B&H Photo and they have the A marking on the lens with IRIS symbol. This zoom does not. I can set the speed (and aperture) in Manual mode- guess that will have to do for now.

Why don't you ask on one of the Fuji specific forums?

I did look on the forum for similar issue but didn't see it. So now it's time to register on the forum and ask that question.

I have the XT2 along with a 23/2.8 "pancake" that has no aperture ring. It works just as you describe with your zoom. I also have the XT1 with which I have shot thousands of images - the 27/2.8 behaves the same on it. What I found out is if you want to shoot in shutter preferred with auto aperture, you need to go past the smallest aperture (biggest aperture number) once you have set the desired shutter speed. When you do that, the aperture numbers in the viewfinder will go from blue to white, which is the functional equivalent of the "A" setting on the lenses with an aperture ring.

I appreciate your bringing this up, because although I very rarely use anything "Auto" other than ISO, I know I would eventually want to know how to do this, and being a Fuji fanatic, I just couldn't believe that Fuji could have missed something this elementary!

Thank you,

Harry B

Alright Harry B- that's got it. Too tricky! Did I miss this in the manual?
Thanks so much

Then, why not just shoot in manual?
