Should also mention that, unlike most micro folks, I generally use auto focus for most of my macro work.

Fantastic images, ottercreek and wish I could do as well and would like to know if you were using a macro lens and a ring or other type of flash on these beauties!

These were shot with a Nikon D500 and Nikon Micro 200mm lens. No flash was used, but I do use a fill flash when necessary. I'm 81 yrs young now, so typically use a tripod or monopod these days, but have always used them when conditions allow. I've used that lens on film cameras, D70, D300, D2X, and D500. I have a Nikon AF Micro 105mm, Nikon bellows, as well as close up lenses, but the working distance allowed by the 200mm Micro is simply amazing. Have owned it since it was first introduced and have used nothing else since for macro work.

Indeed! That is a very good picture, with very optimal focus on a large insect, top to bottom. I had seen a lot of these a few years ago, and nothing recently.
It looks like there is another large insect in the background. What is it?
Thanks for the comments! Just a discoloration in the stump, no insect. I was cleaning up the debris around the stump when I saw the wasp. Got out my tripod, camera, flash. Must have taken dozens of photos. In my profession as a field biologist, I have never gotten as clear of a look of this species as I did of this one. Must have spent a couple of hours watching her!

The eastern giant Ichneumon wasp, Megarhyssa macrurus, shown here ovipositing on a rotting stump, uses her antennae to feel for vibrations of wood boring insects inside the stump. She then will oviposit her eggs directly into the tunnel of the insect. The hatching wasps will feed on the insects. Note that the ovipositor is formed from two ducts. The ducts are sharp on the ends for ease of penetrating the rotting wood. The photo is not as sharp as I would like as I could not locate the original Raw photo. Thus, not stored. Taken with a Nikon D2X, Nikon Micro 200mm and SB 800 used as fill flash.

Attched are 5 photos. First two are of an angle-winged butterfly. Looks like a dead leaf and is frequently overlooked. Ragged wing edges, feeds on sap, rotting fruit, and dung. Butterfly overwinters in knot holes and rotten logs and just MIGHT be seen on a warm winter day.
Scientific name: Polygonia interrogationis.
Common name: question mark.

Second two are of an orange sulphur and an orange sulphur albino.
Scientific name: Colias eurytheme.
Common name: orange sulphur.

Fifth is a hairstreak.
Scientific name: Strymon melinus.
Common name: gray or common hairstreak.

Assorted skipper butterflies. I know, busy pics, but I don't have one grain (silver) or one pixel (digital) of artistic talent!

Yes. but have discovered that updated bridge and camera raw was trying to take me into Photoshop 2018 rather than the updated 2019, problem solved. Thanks much for responding!

Updated all of the above today only to find that I can't open a camera raw image into Photoshop. NEF files prepped in CR won't open, previously processed files will open. Camera is Nikon D500.
