You clever people have hit the nail on the head.
Somehow 3.8 stops of negative exposure compensation was dialed in. I don't normally use that setting.
Thank you for your help.

Don't feel bad. I have done the same thing. Took my great grandson to the water park on a very bright, hot, Texas day and all my photos were severely over-exposed. Finally figured out that +3.0 exposure compensation was still set in my camera. Set EC back to zero and the photos were great. Lesson learned: Check settings before going on a photo shoot.

Yep, my vote is to keep it as it is. I look forwarded to reading UHH with my morning coffee. At 1PM EST my day is occupied and I am busy. And when I get home I have other things to deal with so would probably would not read the Digest nearly as much as I do now. Those who want it changed for their convenience are clearly in the minority. I realize this is not a democracy and the choice is yours but "Why fix it if it ain't broke"?

I'm sure you may have heard this ancient proverb before. It certainly applies in your case:

"It's better to remain silent and be thought ignorant, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

To the OP, nice package. It should sell quickly.

Check out the 2 cameras side-by-side and make your own choice. Although the 7200 wins on points in this comparison my personal choice would be the D5500 because of it's size, weight and portability, and the D5500 will do everything I need at a more reasonable price. Then you can use the money you save for a better lens. I'll bet if you compare photos from the D5500 and the D7200 side-by-side, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I have a ZS-40 and a ZS-50 and they are perfect for a small excellent quality pocket camera with an excellent lens. My wife uses her ZS-50 in Automatic Mode and gets some excellent shots. I'm a little more adventurous and mostly use Aperture Priority on mine. Their shortfall is trying to get a super-sharp photo when using the long zoom feature, hand-held. You need a tripod or some kind of solid support when zooming far out. They are also excellent street cameras for candid photography. I bought both of mine from Costco. They run "specials" on them from time to time at very decent prices.

It really cracks me up that some people have perfectly good mirror cameras but to save a few ounces of weight, they want to start over with an expensive mirrorless rig, new lenses, etc etc.

My neighbor and very good friend has a Nikon D500 with a bunch of lenses. Last week he went out to California for his granddaughter's graduation and a trip up north to see the giant redwoods in Northern California. He got back a few days ago and I asked him if he got some good photos with his D500. He said he got some beautiful photos but he took them with his cellphone. He said the D500 with all the lenses and junk was just too much to haul around. He is in his early 70's. I'll bet there are a lot of us that would understand that. My traveling camera is a Sony A6000 with a Sony 18-105 and I don't feel handicapped at all with it.

This is what you're looking for: Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens

Compact, versatile, adequate reach for a walk-around lens, and excellent reviews. I keep this lens on one of my A6000's and find it to be a very capable. It should meet your requirements for a walk-around lens that " ...packs a big punch in a small package."

Great answer CO. After wading through all the unrelated bloviating, finally a response that addresses the Op's question.

I wood like to see more of these types of documented responses on the forum.

For backup, I too have a Lumix, it is a TZ80 camera. I've read the manuals on the camera which convinced me to never use the "Intelligent" features. Stop using them. Select aperture priority or shutter priority, rotate the dial around the lens, and select your option from there. I have yet to capture a blurred image.

I have a ZS50 and a ZS40. Wife uses her's on Auto or Intelligent Auto and gets excellent photos out of it. I use mine for a walk-around, street camera and often use Auto modes with excellent results. I don't see anything in the manuals for these cameras that would convince me to never use "Intelligent" modes. I'm wondering what you see in the manual that would convince you to not use the Intelligent modes?? I think the OP's problem is the result of low shutter speed and motion. When you zoom way out with these cameras you almost always need a tripod and a very high shutter speed.

That's an excellent package. You might want to move it to the Members/Buy/Sell/Trade--Classified section of the forum. You will get more exposure there. (no pun intended).

That 30mm f1.4 Sigma is a remarkable lens. Dynamic range is excellent.
