I am considering the purchase of a new Canon 7D Mk2, but having just purchased a Tamron 150-600 which works quite well on my 5D Mk2, I'm wondering if this new camera has been yet shown to be compatible with that lens. I know there were some issues with the old 7D at one point. Any experience with the new body and the 150-600 would be interesting to me before I order.
Thanks

In your description of procedure you don't mention using mirror lockup. A moving mirror will cause vibration and blur your shot. Lock the mirror.

You are, of course, correct. The difference apparently is that the layers on film are extremely thin while the layers on the typical digital sensor are much deeper or thicker. Thus, the light striking film at an oblique angle is not creating the focus problem to the degree that it does with the deeper digital sensor. When I questioned the use of older lenses that were indeed designed to function with film, I was observing that those same lenses don't have the advantage of having the light finally directed at 90 ° to the sensor plane. We therefore see that digitally optimized lenses do work well with film, but the opposite is less true. As a result, I'm inclined to recommend that digital camera users use digitally optimized lenses. I would be interested to hear from a more authoritative source than I as to the accuracy of my assumption.

I have not seen anyone's comments on old lenses that address this issue. It is my understanding that "Optimized for Digital" lenses have a number of design changes from the old film lenses. The issue that I find most concerning has to do with the fact that, because digital sensors have layers that deal with the RGB design, they require that the light strikes the sensor at 90° to the sensor plane. This is apparently more of an issue as you employ wider angled lenses and wider apertures. If, as with older lenses, the light strikes the sensor at a more severe or oblique angle, it negatively affects the sharpness and light dispersion of the resulting image. Digitally optimized lenses address this issue. Admittedly, different manufacturers use proprietary techniques in their optimization design, but the basic issue is the angle of attack of the light to the sensor.

Another issue is reflection from the highly polished sensor cover surface back to the rear element of the lens. To combat resulting flare and ghosting, important coatings have been applied to the newer digitally optimized lenses.

My comments here do not address all of the ways in which the digitally optimized lens is different from older film lenses, but it is true that specific issues related to the digital sensor and lens design have been addressed with the newer lenses. For that reason, I lean toward the use of newer lenses in the interest of creating the best quality images that they potentially can create.

I currently use Adobe Camera Raw 8.4 which appears to be the latest available for CS6. I'm assuming I would get the latest profiles by updating to the newest Camera Raw version? Do you know if these new profiles are included in 8.4 or should we expect a newer update from Adobe?

There is indeed hope on the horizon for the delivery of the Tamron 150-600 (Canon mount). I ordered mine March 15th and I am told by Adorama that it's on it's way and will deliver Monday. Since it appears that I will finally get the lens, I have addressed the issue of how to protect it by ordering the least expensive case I could find that looked like it would do the job...the Lowepro 13x32cm Lens Case ($41.95 & free freight at Adorama. If nothing else, it appears to be large enough to house the lens with tripod collar attached. I guess the message is that, if you have been waiting for your 150-600, wait a little longer as it appears there are some shipments taking place at last.

Thanks for the suggestion. I talked to Adorama and they can tell me nothing but cancel my order or wait. I called a Chicago store that has been in business for over 100 years and they told me the lens is on allocation and they would have to place an order for one putting them at the bottom of a long list. They blamed industry bankruptcies of photo businesses which has dried up any credit, meaning that if the retailer doesn't pay in advance they are not likely to get shipped. I suppose small stores with good credit histories may be able to get one at a time now and then, but it appears that suppliers have methodically slowed production due to cash flow problems, if we are to believe the Chicago dealer. At any rate thanks. I guess I'll let it ride for now.

Glad to hear that someone is getting something from Tamron. I've been back-ordered at Adorama on a Canon Mount 150-600 since March 15th. With a planned trip to Montana in mid-July, I'm quite concerned that it just won't make it in time. Anyone hearing of any Canon mount deliveries? I'm beginning to think I should just cancel and forget the whole thing.

I often do business with both B&H and Adorama. In this case I ordered from the latter. As of right now B&H still lists the lens as available for pre-order, meaning of course that they don't have any in inventory. They are no doubt filling backorders with whatever they were able to get in a recent shipment. Since B&H and Adorama are very similar businesses and both are located in Manhattan, they will doubtless both get similar shipments until the backorders are filled. I'll be better off in the Adorama cue rather than starting at the end of the line at B&H I think. Thanks for the suggestions however.

This is truly good news. At least there is hope that I will see my order filled some day. I ordered March 15th from Adorama. Thanks for the information.

Hi...I'm a semi-retired pro photographer specializing in commercial images and some portraiture. I have a client base in musical industry products. I have had a Tamron SP150-600mm lens on order for a few months and am becoming frustrated with the long delivery time. In the meantime I would like to get some feedback from those lucky few who have gotten one of these lenses and are working with it. I am shooting a 5D Mk II most of the time. Any tricks or suggestions to optimize images taken with this lens? The obvious attraction is the reach for the price. I'm aware that low light shooting is not a feature of this lens. I'm hoping that image sharpness will still be excellent, but at the price it's hard to imagine that it will be tack sharp. Observations in this area would be helpful. If you have one, do you like it?
