It is highly over-exposed. As I mentioned, you'll see from previous discussions, that is often what happens with newbie moon shooting. What were your settings?

But also, with this particular shot, it looks like there was a lot of moisture in the air, so regarding focus, you probably wouldn't be able to get sharp anyway.

Sorry, I didn't record the settings. But what surprised me is that image in the view finder looked so much clearer.

Using a Nikon 55-300 on my D7000, I shoot the full moon using these settings with good results: 1/250, f8, ISO 100, hand-held.

That's a great shot !!

First attempt to get a shot of the moon on a bright night with my D5300 w/ Nikkor 55-300mm lens in P (no flash) mode and could only get blurry images. The exposure was not long. If there's a thread on this, I would appreciate a pointer. Thank you.

I have a different version of PS but found a used "PS for dummies" book on Ebay. I have used several of the "for dummies" books in the past and am very satisfied.

What now happens is when you take the card out of the camera and upload the files on your computer it will continue from what ever number was the last picture you took. It will continue to go up in number till it hits 999 on that camera. Instead of the picture after 999 being 1,000 it will start over again at 001. When you load on your computer the file number will be whatever the number is. The date the pictures were took will be added to the file name of whatever program you download your pictures to.

Jethro, thank you so much!

Custom settings menu D.4 Page 55 in your manual.

Jethro,

Thank you for being so patient with a newbie. I went to this menu setting, changed it to on, deleted an image (#406) and then took another shot and it was numbered DSC-0001. Now I already had an image on this chip with the same number so I panicked and looked and the original DSC-0001 was still there. So, if I copy this set of images onto my laptop again, will I have two number "1"s? All I wanted to do was to not reuse the number of a deleted image so that when I download the files, each one will have a unique number regardless of whether I delete it frm the SD card or not. Thanks in advance.

I can't find "custom menu" option via the menu on the camera. Is D4 something available on the D5300?

Thank you,
Dave

Subject camera is a Nikon D5300. Maybe I'm making a mistake somewhere, but when I delete images from the SD card in the cameral, then when I resume shooting, the camera uses the same file name/number again. Therefore, if I download the images onto my laptop and then clear the SD card, the next set of images will carry the same file names and numbers and overwrite what I had previously saved on my laptop. It's complicating my file management on my laptop. Please help if I'm doing something incorrectly.

Davey I think you were probably standing further back from the subject with the 75mm then you would for the 50mm.
Anybody think this is crazy? Was it exactly the same crop and frame??

Same size subject in the frame. Just looked like the subject's nose was more like a 50 mm perspective than a 75 mm perspective.

I am relatively new to this sport and I have been trying to unravel the differences between full frame and cropped sensors. I gather there is a lot to this issue but I would just like a simple answer to a simple question if that's possible. If I have a camera with a 1.5 cropped sensor and use it with 300mm prime lens, would I need a 450mm lens with a full frame sensor to get the same size image in my viewfinder. PERIOD! I'm not talking about differences in perspective or any other subtle or not so subtle differences. And please be gentle. I bruise easily!!

I know you don't want to discuss perspective. I have been working over this same issue and I think I have learned that perspective can matter if you take portraits. A 50mm lens on my crop sensor has the 75mm field of view, but the portrait (think noses for example) still looks like it was taken with a 50 mm lens. If I'm missing something here, I am sure one of the experienced hoggers will help us out on this.

It is sad to see such craftsmanship being considered worthless. They do take up space though. perhaps a local/community museum might be willing to have a display of old equipment rather than throwing it out donate it and even volunteer to help make the display and provide the history for future generations.

Before sending cameras to a dump, think about letting school kids take them apart to see how they work. Could generate some interest in mechanics.

I have Nikon D5300. I took Hoggers' advice and took the 18-140 and an f1.8 35mm. Hardly used the 35mm and used the 18-140 about 99% of the time. Since then, I find that the 18-140 is a go to lens. I have 4 others (18-55 (light indoor lens), 35 F1.8, 50 f 1.8 and 55-300 (for reach)). I find that the kit lens, 18-140 is on my body almost 90% of the time. Seems to be the best combination most always. At my grand daughter's wedding yesterday, it did the job. I noticed the professional also used a zoom 100% of the time. Didn't ask as I didn't want to disturb her work.

Have to get a lens with more reach than the 200. Photographing grandsons baseball games and decided on a 300 zoom, but would like opinions on choices. 1. New Tamron 70-300 or 2. Factory refurbished Nikon 55-300.

Thanks for input .

I just received my refurb Nikon 55-300 last week. Checked it out at an evening soccer game and was pleased with results so far. Snagged an excellent action shot of my grandson. D5300. Got mine from Adorama (E-Bay) for $200
