No value to 35mm film cameras?

Just an example of how hard it is to get any money for 35mm gear. Aside from a few brands and models they are about completely worthless. There's a Craigslist listing here in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA for 28 35mm bodies and 38 lenses for $300. It's been up for 4 days. The ad claims they are all clean and functional. The high cost of film and processing led me to get rid of my 35mm cameras. I finally threw away two Minolta 5 bodies (very advanced SLRs) and two Minolta zooms after I could not even get $25 for the lot.

Don't feel bad. I'm getting rid of my entire Leica "R" collection & am taking a major hit.

It is sad to see such craftsmanship being considered worthless. They do take up space though. perhaps a local/community museum might be willing to have a display of old equipment rather than throwing it out donate it and even volunteer to help make the display and provide the history for future generations.

The Minolta and Leica lenses can both be used on Sony cameras with the right adapter. Put them up for sale or sell them to B+H.

Here in UK it is common to see, at my local auction house, bags full of film cameras together with lenses, light meters and other accessories. They sell for a pittance. No-one wants film any more. Digital rules.

Not at all uncommon anymore. A local collector tried to sell his treasure trove of Canon AE-1 bodies over the last 2 years. He got rid of a few that had good lenses, but for pennies on the dollar of what they were worth 10 years ago. Last fall he hauled 168 of those working bodies to the dump because he was tired of storing them and no one was interested in buying them, even for parts donors.

Keep dumping them and the remaining might have value.

I'll say it again, check out the prices of these "junk" lenses on B+H or KEH before you toss them.

I look at the picture and among the 28 of them. A lot of Minolta but no Maxxum 7 or 9, no Minolta XD-11 or XE-7. There is a Nikon but none of the F series or even FE , FM or Nikkormat. Not even an Olympus OM series.

Still have my f5 with a 70-210 and 35-135 lens. Lenses work on my digital but camera is devalued so much I think I'll just keep it!

Before you throw your old gear away, PM me and I'll give you my address. You can send it to me and I'll take it off your hands. I guarantee, it won't be thrown away.

It's true that it's not worth what it used to be, but a lot of it isn't worthless. It all depends on what you have and what you are willing to do to find a buyer. If you are holding out for 1980s and 1990s money, those days are gone, but old camera gear is sellable.

I run into people all the time that absolutely refuse to sell what they have because they can't get $xxx for it. (Not just camera gear, but anything they have had for a long time). They wait and wait and wait and hang on hoping the markets will come back, then they die and their children throw it away when they don't know what to do with it.

Please send this poor soul a Canon lens if you have one in that lot. I love the old and still use them. Please let me know if you have Canon lenses only. I will pay for the shipping. Thanks

Try getting something for a 5 - 10 year old digital.

In the 1970s a 1959 Cadillac could bring the price of a bus pass,Today......Well there is truth in what you say! Meanwhile it's never been better for a collector (who collects for fun,not profit) !
