well, you have lost your own argument...anyone who knows anything at all about weapons or is reasonably competant at all with guns and is crazy enough can take perfectly legal small calibre pistols with enough clips of ammo into any public place and cause a giant massacre....it is the lunatics fault..not the guns..so go ahead & outlaw "big guns" or whatever you are afraid of and the crazies & the criminals will still be there..again I point to Mexico where gun control is damn near absolute...even if you get a permit the federales can come get your guns on a whim....and they do...and look at the murder rate per 100,000 people...
maybe you should turn in your "sporting arms" now to the cops..
would you really feel safe at home?????? I doubt it..

Grover..why did you leave Mexico out of that list of countries??
kinda screws up your little list, doesnt it....if they cant get enough guns, then Eric Holder,& Obama supplies them...Dont believe that..ask the parents of the murdered agent!!! The country is still waiting on a apology from Holder but imagine it will be a long wait...God help us if these fruitcakes get another 4 years...

who are you or who am I to determine need....those people who think they can determine need of others usually infringe on basic rights.....idiots like the COlorado shooter can find weapons regardless of any law...

handguns murdered NO ONE..someone holding them did....do you ban axes or knives if a crime is committed with them..

the UN small arms treaty, supported by Obama & Hillary is designed to eventually confiscate & ban private ownership of handguns...once their foot is in the door..look out..this is not paranoia but exactly the intent of the far left..

Huey driver you are 110 percent correct...Just check out our neighbors to the South...The mexican cartels would not be near as strong if the populace were armed....I know..I live there about 5 months/year...

answaim, I suppose "fry" in my case was a poor choice of words. The lens would not automatically extend or retract & had to be manually focused....I dont really know if it was an electrical malfunction or if it just physically stuck..but at any rate it was a major hassle to manually adjust it...But Tamron was prompt & gracious about repairing it...It was the old lens not the PZD or whatever the new model is...regardless of the one-time problem I would not hesitate to purchase another Tamron product..

I had a Tamron 18-270 lens fry in the Galopagos...Returned it for warranty work ...No hassle...was returned promptly...no problems since...just wish it had smoked here instead of on a great trip..

Ive had the old 18-270 for several years (Not the PZD) very nice walk-about lens...helped a lot by the 2x multiplier but that makes the auto-focus on my 50D go out of whack..aWas in the Galopogas when the zoom went south & I had to manually work the zoom....COmpany fixed it but kind of dampended the trip experience...That being said I would like to have the new 18-270 with the PZ Drive...I thionk Tamron & Sigma are pretty good products for the money..have to remember you usually get about what you pay for...

well, after reading yourfirst post again maybe I should not have replied.
you said "great photographers". Im just an old hack..but I have fun being an old hack...but still NO I would not take a 500 mm lens..unless you have someone to lug it around..to each his own..

was there last year...yes you can walk very, very close to the wildlife...I used a Tamron 18-270 most of the time & used a 2X multiplier occasionally...Im glad I didnt lug around a 500mm lens..I did use a Sigma 10-20 a few times..was a very interesting experience..DO take an extra zoom lens if you have room in case your main lens fries...ask me how I know!! I did not take a tripod & would not if I returned there but a monopod may be handy to double as a walking cane..take plenty of batteries & memory..& comfortable walking shoes...first time in my life I actually got bored with boobies...
