Really nice, Joe. And it's just now lunch time here. I think I'll have some gumbo.

Thanks Ken - good to see that my presentation of these exotic veggies (well, at least some of them) are steering you towards your state's official cuisine - Bon Appetit!

Amazing how Hong Kong exports to the world yet, as we can see by the foods sold at this market that Hong Kong imports from the world foods native to every where else too. Cool photo geography presentation.

Thanks for looking in on the tour again, Mike, and your kind comment. Yes, most of the food consumed in Hong Kong has to be imported, that is just a matter of geographical fact. Most of the imports come from China, and from other nearby Asian countries like the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Hong Kong's area is smaller than that of Los Angeles, and the population is more than double. Some food is actually still produced in Hong Kong, mainly aquaculture and vegetable farming in the New Territories. I wonder how much food is produced in the city of Los Angeles, with its larger area and less than half of its population? Actually Hong Kong still has some land that has not been built over, as we will see in the coming posts, but much of that is very hilly and not suited for agriculture.

That is a lot of meat, Is it all sold same day? Is there refrigeration for it if not? Pictures made me want to try some new things like the sausage and fish rolls

Thank you for looking in on the travelogue, k9moe. Yes, that is a lot of meat, but this is a very active market in a very populated area, so the turnover would be good. Whether it is all sold the same day, I have no idea, but I would think that most would go and also that they would have refrigeration for what is kept over. There are definitely a few interesting and rather unusual things to try here, like the fish balls and most of the meat displayed in that butcher shop window in frame 1. Welcome to the tour!

The beef looks really good. Some of the rest of it not so much!

Yes, the red meat is the easy part, and it does look good. The fish balls are great too, and so are most of the roasted meat shown in the window in the first frame - the rest is interesting but not necessarily for me.

Yep, it's possible! I was stationed on Guam, then the Philippines, and back to Guam. Spent an awful lot of time on aircraft carriers during that period. Pulling in to Hong Kong two or three times a year.
Did you ever make it to Taiwan? I was in Taipei and Tainan a number of times. Usually just a remain over night (RON) in small aircraft for fuel and crew rest on our way to somewhere else. But spent more time (a day or two) on occasion. Very interesting time and places.

Interesting life story, Chief! Yes, I have been to Taiwan multiple times, worked there twice for about 3-4 weeks each, actually spent my first Christmas in Asia in Taipei at the manager's house, that was in 1968. Worked there also in 1970, then visited Taiwan (Taipei, Yehliu, Sun Moon Lake and Tarokko Gorge) with Susan in 1980 and actually I went back by myself in November 2019 on a trip around the entire island - I always enjoyed Taiwan.

I think I would have a reluctance to purchase meat at the market - definitely not chicken feet. Never heard of fish balls. Thanks for this series, Joe. Have a good day.

Rowedean

Thank you Rowedean, we do have that same hesitation, never bought meat at the market. I have tried chicken feet, nothing wrong with them, but also nothing to rave about in my opinion, there is so much other great stuff around, that I say no to these. Now fish balls, that is another story, normally served in a soupy broth, these can be very delicious. Have a great day also!

Another set of wonderful market images, Joe. Great detail in the downloads. I was hoping that you would include images of the meat and seafood stalls. I’m always fascinated when visiting markets to see freshly butchered meat sitting unrefrigerated. Especially loved seeing the great variety of seafood balls. I like that you include the map in your posts.

Thanks Joe, I am happy to hear that you enjoyed this set. Pictures of meat are sometimes a bit tricky, some people might get upset and displaying this meat in a tropical environment without refrigeration makes me personally a bit nervous too. Luckily these shots were taken in November, when the temperatures were actually very pleasant. The seafood balls are something I personally was not familiar with, learned to appreciate them through Susan, when we eat them in restaurants or sometimes at home. Glad to hear that you enjoy the inclusion of the map, I always want to know where things are at, and think that many of the viewers hopefully like to see this information. I actually love to make up these maps.
