What kind of system do you have and how old is it?

Windows 10 Home
I7-4790 @ 3.6 GhZ
16 gb ram
64 bit OS

SS Drive for OS and Programs

I presume entry level or older model at the time as fairly cheap when bought 3 years ago (< 500.00). Seems to lag at times compared to previous slower processor PC with Windows 7 but thaty may be Win OS 10 vs 7

Thanks for advice/suggestions

I thought I read somewhere that a dedicated graphics card would speed up photo processing. But I would not think that would help as the bottlenecks would seem to be due to cpu speed, disk drive speed and file size issues.

So does a speedy graphics card get you anything in photo processing in Affinity, Ps etc - photographs only? No video.

Thanks

I have access to ON1, old PS, Affinity, Corel Paint shop and the original software that came with my Nikon D 300

I think I am going to settle on Affinity as my software of choice.

Does anyone think there is strong reason not to use the built in RAW processor in Affinity vs any of the other options above.

1 AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II $650
2 AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR $600 on sale
3 AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR. $1000

What are the differences between lenses 2 and 3 except for the 6.3 to 5.6 speed differential? Is this the only difference to account for the price differential?

Are lenses 1 and 3 pretty much the same except for the extra reach?

Any other things I should consider but don’t know to ask?

It appears none are compatible with telephone converters - is this correct?

Thanks

Affinity has nice sale on all products

DXO has sale on products including NIX collection

Regarding the new NIX collection: does it play nice with Affinity and does it have any new features compared to the older, free version ?

Thanks

I have a few IR questions

I am trying to make an intelligent buying decision. Intend to have Nikon D 200 converted to IR.

My major goal will be to create infrared Black & White photographs. I would like, however, to maintain as much flexibility as possible. Some of the “CandyLand” color photographs are interesting (to some at least). I have reviewed LifePixel’s web site and talked to their reps but I am still not sure I have a good grasp of what is going on.

I am in looking to make this functional and fun - not a lifetime of hassle

Therefore if someone could help I would appreciate it:

Questions:
1) Companies like Lifepixel install an infrared filter. Is this a high-pass or band-pass filter? (I think these would be the appropriate terms but am not sure). LifePixel has multiple filters at various frequencies. Does this mean that everything above the frequency of the filter is passed (high pass) or only things at or near that frequency (band pass) are passed to the sensor?

2) They talk about full spectrum and then adding on a filter for certain frequencies. This requires an appropriate filter for each lens size. What are the down sides/up sides of this approach? Expense would be a one time issue. Do these filters materially affect exposure time? Do they work well? I suspect there are other issues I am not aware of, however. If somebody could fill me in I would appreciate this.

3) Getting the camera to focus appropriately is problematic. If I opted for solution 2 (see above) are there ramifications for focusing?

4) Any comments on things I should have asked would be appreciated.

Sorry for rambling and jumping about but I am still trying to get a fix on IR.

Looking at getting an old camera - Nikon D200 or 300.

I have never bought anything on Ebay.

Most gear seems unrated. Some sellers allow return, some not. Descriptions are often internally inconsistent.

Seems to me that buying used via B&H, Adorma or KEH (possibly others - if so whom?) would be best way to do this so as to have some idea of what one is getting with the potential for return.

Looks like this route costs a bit more, but seems worth it to me.

Comments, thoughts, opinions

Thanks
