Looking at getting an old camera - Nikon D200 or 300.
I have never bought anything on Ebay.
Most gear seems unrated. Some sellers allow return, some not. Descriptions are often internally inconsistent.
Seems to me that buying used via B&H, Adorma or KEH (possibly others - if so whom?) would be best way to do this so as to have some idea of what one is getting with the potential for return.
Looks like this route costs a bit more, but seems worth it to me.

For USA sales I prefer KEH.
For Ebay I prefer the sales from Japanese sellers. Seem to have better quality products or are honest about grading and calling out flaws etc. I also always select the returns allowed filter. But have gotten some great products on Ebay but again most all from Japanese sellers.
KEH by far I have bought used camera equipment from them. Their appraisals of equipment are fair, their process of send equipment for evaluation is quick and simple. Getting paid for used equipment one you decided to sell to KEH is also quick
I use KEH they have a warranty one items and I know you can extend it on cameras and lens.
I have bought and sold cameras on Craig's list. Just sold my D3300 kit last week and six months ago I bought a well used D7000 that I was able to hold in my hand before I forked over any money. No rating needed. Also, about a month ago I picked up a well kept 18-140 kit lens.

You are on the right track. KEH, Adorama, or B&H. I always use B&H for new and used. Great customer service. They stand by their stuff, and word. Their prices are always good too.
Happy hunting.
Have purchased used cameras and photo gear from all three and been very pleased.
If you are interested in a Nikon D300, I have a very pristine one including the original box with several extra memory cards, an extra battery, and charger. I also have 1 or 2 popular books about using the D300 that would be included or the body only if you wish.
This way you would be purchasing from a fellow Hedgehog member and photo enthusiast instead of an Ebay unknown that could be pawn shop, stolen camera, or one found at a garage sale and flipped for a quick buck.

As with photo equipment in general you will be the safest sticking to the ABCs (Adorama, B&H, Cameta) + KEH (limited to used). Generally for used gear you will get up to a 6 month warranty and also the ability to return hassle free for a refund if you are not happy with the purchase. Check the listings for each and it may pay as well to call their sales department- possibly they have what you are looking for that’s in process and not yet showing on the web sites.
A nice feature of KEH is the ability to have them notify you when a desired item comes up for sale. I bought an Olympus E-5 the moment I received the e-mail from KEH. I periodically scan the KEH pages. They seem to have a rapid turnover of items for sale. If it isn't in stock this week it may be next.

Ebay is the best way to save $$ and lose the middle man. Buy from someone only with 100% feedback, read the description and if it comes to you and it is not to that description they have to return your $ and pay your shipping both ways even if they don't take returns. Ebay is best if you follow this formula!

MPB is relatively new but I had a good experience with them selling some gear.

PayPal is my currency when buying. In my years of online buying, I have had one problem, wrote the seller, no reply, no merchandise. Next, I contacted PayPal and wrote a complaint. PayPal contacted seller no results for one week so PayPal credited my account with the money at PayPal's expense. Clean and easy and safe.
