I have hadseveral instances where pics taken on largw bodies ofwater in sunlight are washed out. What am I doing wrong

Vivitar and several other brands have zoom lenses around 500 mm but are manual focus and no vibration reduction. I know that at $125 they must have issues, but us it possible to get a good picture with one of these lenses? I am a newbie and my wife doesnt think much of the idea of a $2000 lens. :roll:
