HDR, High Dynamic Range was designed for those shots that exceeded the limitations of the sensor in a single photo. I see a lot of shots taken on an overcast day that are no where near a high dynamic range but are within a standard dynamic range. If your exposure is spot on then what does the HDR process give you. It seems to me it en tales a lot of extra steps that are redundant. Now when you try and photograph a high contrast scene at mid day then I do understand the process. I've tried using HDR on shots that do not have a high dynamic range and find that the single shot properly done is more appealing than one being doctored for the doctors sake.

Don't get me wrong, I do love the HDR process just curious about non hdr shots being run through the hdr process. Please help me understand, thanks.

I base my answers on personal experience with several (non techie) customers and their predicaments. With out being there and having an understanding of first and second level help desk techs I would be willing to bet that the first time the pics were not lost just hiding. I see some of my customers save their "stuff" in weird places and when I ask them where they shrug their shoulders and say "right there on the computer" <sigh>

The same can be said for the second time when the problem was solved and the photos magically re-appeared. Now if indeed the photos were actually gone I would also be willing to bet that LR was not the culprit but a fat finger thing would be the usual suspect. Oh yes, and a convenient memory lapse. LOL

In her original post the OP said the first time this happened she lost all the photos not just the catalog and never found them. She indicated when it happened again recently she still had the originals unlike the event in December. Did i read her post incorrectly?

The photos were never gone. LR just couldn't load them due to the lock situation expressed earlier.

Its still not clear to me where the missing files were located. Were they on a specific location on the hard drive? On an external drive? Or were they somewhere in the cloud? If they are on the cloud I could easily see how they could disappear, which is why I would never trust important data to some third party's protection, especially without a backup on my end. If they were on the hard drive or an external drive there is no way LR could have spontaneously deleted them. And if deleted, some of them at least would be in the recycle bin. The OP needs to provide us with a lot more detail on the specifics of the computer, and the specific location of the missing files, otherwise this is all guesswork.

I have a couple of customers that run into this every now and then. LR wants to auto create a default library that it keeps wanting to choose. This is usually on the C drive but many folks create another library on another drive or in another location. LR remembers this but if that drive is unavailable or has changed letters then LR defaults to it's own library which has 0 entries. If this happens go to FILE - OPEN RECENT and choose your library.

You can also choose PREFERENCES - GENERAL - DEFAULT CATALOGUE and choose PROMPT ME... This solves the problem out-right.

Rest assured LR does not include or act upon your photos, it only keeps a record of where they are located and any changes you wish to make to them. The only exception to this is when you hit the delete key and then it asks you several times, "Are you sure"

But glad you found the LOCK resolution.

Think I would have preferred a sliver of real sky in #2. Nice framing with the small branches at bottom. Possibly even a slow time exposure to smooth out the ripples. Just my $0.02 worth.

I concur with all the above. I should have given more clarity to my answer. In my defense, the above is a given.

A man buys a Porsche and every day he drives to his next door neighbors house about 100 feet away. At the end of the day he backs it up to his own house and he is very happy. What a waste of the Porsche. (or Lightroom)

I would suggest, IMHO, to use 200 ISO and a 15 second exposure. This should keep your sky dark enough to know it's night and still show the trails. Using 1000 ISO just adds noise to the shot. Not just your camera but all regardless of the marketing hype. If you still have a buffer problem place a delay between shots of say 5 seconds. Of course this assumes you have an inter-valometer and aren't using the multi-shot locked cable release method. Good luck.

Also, found the shot pretty bright but I can just make out the star trails. Was your intent to make this a daytime look? Maybe you could lower the ISO to 200 which is just over a 2 stop difference and may help the trails show better and darken down the sky. Not to mention the reduced noise. Just a thought.

Make sure the noise reduction in camera is turned off, especially if you are shooting 30 second exposures. This just adds time to the processing. Reduce the noise after in PP. Also, purchase a larger card that is faster. The slow standard ones out there are OK for general shooting but when it comes to TLP you really want the data to fly and get out of the camera.

Sorry to hear about the infliction. Hope they find a method to solve it.

per below, you can use the filters to give you just the landscapes or portraits. The program will do the work for you IF you tell it to.

How about you import all of them with either no develop preset OR a generic one that ALL your images get?

THEN....

You can select JUST the landscape ones or just the portraits and batch process them separately.

You could even give ALL images the same preset (like a landscape preset) and then when they are all in LR just select ONLY the portraits and change the preset applied..

Very easy...
