A little Lightroom 3 help please

Hi all,
I love LR3 but get frustrated when uploading a diverse batch of images - ie portrait style shots and nature/landscape. I want to use different develop settings for each of those groups of shots but in order to omit or select images from the upload I have to individually check or uncheck each image. I've tried to click on the first image, hold the shift key and click on the last but only one gets selected. Does anyone know the magic solution to select or deselect more than one image during uploading?

I'm using LR4, but when I want to select a batch for import, I do shift click on the first image then scroll down to the last and Shift click it. In LR4 they all light up and are all imported. Does not make sense that it would not work in LR3. Perhaps a more experienced and expert explanation from one of the other members will help more.

I don't know why either, ebrunner. Hopefully someone else here will have a solution for me. Thanks for chiming in.

If you have each type seperate, not all willy nilly, then simply click on your first one, hold the shift key and click on the last one of that style. Do your import.
Then do the second style and do your import. Otherwise, to the best of my knowledge you will have to click and pick.

Well I see it that way. She is wanting to do presets prior to the import. Which can be done. For each batch.

Went back and carefully re-read the OP's message.
I got confused by 'uploading' since the LR term is 'importing'.

If she's having problems in the file selection box, then it sounds like the 'shift' key isn't working. Try the one on the other side of the keyboard.

How about you import all of them with either no develop preset OR a generic one that ALL your images get?

THEN....

You can select JUST the landscape ones or just the portraits and batch process them separately.

You could even give ALL images the same preset (like a landscape preset) and then when they are all in LR just select ONLY the portraits and change the preset applied..

Very easy...

Sure, if you are trying to import just a select few from your memory card to the computer there's two ways to do it. If doing a bunch in a row just click on the first, hold shift, select the last, then click on the little check box so that those that you have highlighted (selected) have the check removed from the box. Then import. The same thing can be done if you want just a few select images by clicking the first, hold ctrl, keep clicking the rest of the images you want selected one at a time until you have all you want, the click any one of the check boxes and it will uncheck all those you have selected. Then import.

Import them all into a single folder labeled with the date in Library mode. Then right click on that folder on the left side and create subfolders with in it, named any way you want. Left click the original folder and highlight the ones along the bottom filmstrip view that you want to move and drag them into the subfolder of your choice.

You can choose groups by clicking the first, holding shift, and clicking the last. Or you can cherry pick from a batch by clicking one, holding down CTRL on a PC, and click a second one, still hold down CTRL and click on a third, etc. Then drag that cherry picked group to the left side folder of your choice.

per below, you can use the filters to give you just the landscapes or portraits. The program will do the work for you IF you tell it to.

If you press the control button and then click with your mouse, you can create a "group" item by item that don't have to be next to each other. Works in LR4 don't see why it won't work in 3
