It came out two months too late for me, so I went a different route.
too bad....you'd be a good reference......well, still hoping for someone with AW1 experience....thanks

The Olympus TG-3 and Nikon 1 AW-1 are two very distinct cameras. Basically, the AW-1 has a larger sensor and interchangeable lenses, the TG-3 costs less.
agree...that seems to be the case.......I am hoping to find someone who has the AW1 to let me know what they think about it....thanks

You gotta check out the Olympus TG-3!

DPReview rates it as the best of the waterproof compact cameras...but says its above water images aren't great.....??
I am hoping for very good images in a camera that I can drop in the water for a few seconds...when canoeing.....but won't be diving.........thanks

Edit - Sorry I was thinking video not still photography.
Have you looked at the GoPro? My son has one and used it for one of his dives and snowboarding and other above land adventures?
My son has one too!! That is an alternative.....maybe I'll try his this summer.
Anyone familiar with the Nikon 1 AW1??

You didn't mention budgets.
The Panasonic GH3 and GH4 are sealed to be weatherproof if used with a few of their Lumix lenses that are also rated as weatherproof.
Another approach is insurance. When I bought my last camera from B&H, I included the optional "all hazard" insurance. I'm supposed to be able to "drop it in the pool" and get it replaced.
Interesting ideas..especially the insurance. I already have a D300 so I am not ready to spring for the GH3 or 4.
Hoping to stay under $1000
thanks
thanks....I looked at the DPReview info......they are intriguing..but none seems to have very high quality images above water......
I am looking for a camera to take kayaking, canoeing, etc. I won't be diving with it but it could get very wet. I'd like the potential of capturing high quality images....which most of the underwater compacts don't seem to do.
I just tripped into the Nikon 1 AW1. It is expensive but looks more like what I am looking for. Anyone have experience with this camera? Have any better ideas?
thanks
thanks, I'll check that out...
gee...that's helpful.....I guess I was wrong expecting some actual photographers to have better ideas than Google...
does anyone have recommendations about good video podcasts on photography? thanks
do you mind my asking...what is the price range for a system like yours?
thanks....I was afraid of that......makes my decision simple....unfortunately
I don't think I made my question clear enough. I use the PSE organizer (tags, photo stacks, version sets, layers, ratings, etc) to manage, edit and find my pictures.
I assumed that in using Lightroom along with PSE I'd import all my photos into Lightroom and use it to do the organizer function along with the first round of editing. And, that I'd use PSE only for some of the editing that Lightroom doesn't do.
So, if that is the case (feel free to give me a better idea) then I am wondering if Lightroom will retain, and make available, all of the work that I have already done to organize (tag, version sets, ratings, layers, etc.) my photos in PSE. Or, will that be lost? And, how difficult is it to move PSE catalogs into Lightroom?
